N. Korea fires artillery towards S. Korean island, official says

SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired several rounds of artillery towards South Korean waters and an island near the tense west sea border, the South's military said.

The North's artillery shells fell at 2:34 p.m. in the South's waters off the island of Yeonpyeong, some of them landing directly on the island, said Col. Lee Bung-woo, spokesman at the South's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The South's military responded with its artillery firing.

If they start on Baekryong Island, too, soon, then it is a Pearl Harbor for sure.

Don’t expect much from Lee Myung-bak. I hope he goes into his underground bunker and never come out.

Yeah, he has been in for a couple of hours, sending out the message that SK military "should not escalate" the incident, and trying to make another diplomatic resolution at UN.

As I said in another thread, he should stay there and sit out his remaining term underground.

They have gone to war footing in the Presidential office (Blue House). Underground. I suspect this is what is holding up the National Security Council meeting being adjorned.

This is clearly the DPRK getting angry at the South yesterday for saying they will allow tactical nukes, in reply to DPRK showing their nuke facility to the Americans which was in and of itself a clever extortionist attempt. It backfired on the North and they (Kim Jong il) went ballistic and ordered the attack in revenge. This is now wars are indeed started.

YTN TV now showing footage of South Korean artillery firing back at North.

This whole thing is ridiculous...

One side or the other needs to kick this thing off or just go the hell home.

This back and forth pissing match is utterly foolish.

Revenge or escalation before the tactical nukes arrive ? Dealing with these scumbags is difficult.

My guess is what happnes next is up to China. They let their insane pit bull loose on the neighborhood. I still don’t think a war is in their best interest at this time but it may be out of their hands. Chia head is nuts.

I’ve been following this twitter feed that another FReeper mentioned:

http://twitter.com/W7VOA

# @JShahryar We’re checking on that. Update in a few minutes. 1 minute ago via TweetDeck in reply to JShahryar

# Residents on Yeongpyeong describing scene of utter chaos. Mountains, homes ablaze from #DPRK artillery attack. #ROK 3 minutes ago via TweetDeck

# 3 hrs. into crisis not one #ROK gov’t official has appeared on TV to speak to reporters or the nation. #Korea 11 minutes ago via TweetDeck

# RT @YonhapNews: Gov’t to check economic impact of N. Korean artillery attack http://bit.ly/hcnqmM 30 minutes ago via TweetDeck

. . .

It seems odd that it’s the “economic impact” of being attacked that’s on their mind.

But then, the world’s gone mad.

I’m watching Korean TV live and still wondering what that “missile” was about off the coast of California a week or so ago.

Been looking around live Seoul webcams and even though I've never seen the place, things look like a normal bustling city.

I agree, the South Koreans have held Naval exercises there and put over a 1000 marines on the island a couple of miles for North Korea.

Even the South Koreans are not pushing to go to the UN.

Provocation has been shown both sides.

Lee Jin-Man/AP 9.02am: Tania Branigan emails from Beijing:

The artillery attacks are a “totally justifiable act of self-defence” in response to the South’s sea drills, an unofficial spokesman for North Korea has said, warning that nuclear war could follow “at any point” unless the exercises stop. Pyongyang has repeatedly issued such threats in the past.

“We repeatedly warned South Korea to stop its dangerous war games. If the South continues its dangerous behaviour, Seoul will be the next target. It will be a sea of fire. Nuclear war could start at any point,” said Kim Myong-chol, executive director of the Centre for Korean-American Peace. He said it was fair to describe him as speaking on behalf of the North’s government.

He added: “We have repeatedly warned the South to avoid endangering our territory on sea or air.”

Not really. Pissing off the other side means landing troops on your island near his mainland.
