When I was 11, my father thought it was time to show my sister and me the nation's capital. I have only vague memories of that trip the heat, the expanse of the White House's grounds, the Jefferson Memorial.
I do remember we took Route 1 through Baltimore (no I-95 yet), and it was there that I saw my first sign with the word "colored" on it a rooming house, I think. This was 1952, and the United States was an apartheid nation.
It is Sarah Palin who brings back these memories. In her new book, she reportedly takes Michelle Obama to task for her supposedly infamous remark from the 2008 campaign: "For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback."
Instantly, Republicans pounced. Among the first to do so was Cindy McCain, who said, "I have and always will be proud of my country." It was a cheap shot, but her husband's selection of Palin for the ticket and plenty of cheap shots from Palin ("death panels," etc.) were yet to come.
Michelle Obama quickly explained herself. She was proud of the turnout in the primaries so many young people, etc. Evan Thomas, writing perceptively in Newsweek, thought as I did that she was saying something else.
He dug into her senior thesis at Princeton "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community" to find a young woman who felt, or was made to feel, "more aware of my 'blackness' than ever before." This was not a statement of racism. This was a statement of fact.

EUGENE ROBINSON is an IDIOT!!
Lol...tool.
So she’s “black”...she’s a RACIST. Also, she hates America, hates non-”black” Americans but loves our money. She probably felt a tingle go down her leg (shudder!) each Sunday when the racist “Reverend” Wright spouted his racist drivel for the 20+ years she attended his “church”.
As always, Robinson’s race-mongering fails on this point - wasn’t Obama black when the voters elected him?
I read the article and it deserves the barf alert. However, it was written by Richard Cohen, not Eugene Robinson. Not saying Eugene would disagree, but...
Ah... just to clarify, the reference there is to Eugene Robinson.
No relation, I take it.
How come I am reading “eugene robinson” as “richard cohen”?
>> EUGENE ROBINSON is an IDIOT!!
You can say that again.
No relation, eh? :-)
On the brighter side, I look for Eugene’s head to explode just any day now.
No, we are not relations. ~~Forrest Gump
Come to think of it, I’m not related to the idiot Richard Cohen either.
Christopher Hitchens
on Michelle Obamas thesis: Mrs. Obamas 1985 thesis at Princeton University. Its title (rather limited in scope, given the author and the campus) is Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community. http://www.scribd.com/doc/2305083/PrincetonEducated-Blacks-and-the-Black-Community
To describe it as hard to read would be a mistake; the thesis cannot be read at all, in the strict sense of the verb. This is because it wasnt written in any known language. Anyway, at quite an early stage in the text, Michelle Obama announces that shes much influenced by the definition of black separationism offered by Stokely Carmichael and Charles Hamilton in their 1967 screed Black Power: The Politics of Liberation in America. I remember poor Stokely Carmichael quite well. After a hideous series of political and personal fiascos, he fled to Africa, renamed himself Kwame Toure after two of West Africas most repellently failed dictators, and then came briefly back to the United States before electing to die in exile. - Christopher Hitchens
Someone should inform Cohen that the people who did all those things to the blacks, post civil war, were democrats.
What she MEANT was as in my tagline.
Hey, dummy. Do you know who was responsible for those “Colored” and “White Only” signs? Your beloved Democratic Party.
There's no reason it couldn't be both. But come'on she was residing at the epicenter of liberal academia; this is what they discuss, race, race, race, race. Sometimes they break from the monotony to discuss gender or sexual identification. How can you fail to be aware of something when everyone in your circle is discussing it - constantly.
of course he is .
Michelle Robinson’s thesis @ Pton was effrontery-pure and simple. It was a slap in the face to her professors and mentors (if there were ones who took an interest in her)
and she’s still angry.
Why be angry when the world was laid at your feet with the admission to an Ivy?. I think i may know why-she must have been very very alone and afraid. She may have felt like an outcast. She didn’t pass the paperbag test like the other african-american upper crust/class students of her generation. Of course they ignored her-her skin was darker, her hair was kinky but most importantly she did not have a pedigree and she came directly from the ghetto.
Remember that 1st trip to Martha’s Vineyard and the black islanders called her “ghetto”??
She still is.
there’s a plethora of information located here—>”Our Kind of People” by Lawrence Otis Graham.
I’ve read it over the years a number of times, analyzed it and believe it or not -it’s a very racist book - even towards it’s “own people”.
That is the perfect picture of Liberal. If soembody that looks like that showed up around here, he would get his a#@ whooped for looking so sissy and metrosexual.
Even after they were freed they were consigned to peonage, second-class citizens, forbidden to vote in much of the South, dissuaded from doing so in some of the North, relegated to separate schools, restaurants, churches, hotels, waiting rooms of train stations, the back of the bus, and the other side of the tracks, the mortuary, the cemetery and, if whites could manage it, heaven itself.
Yes, Little Richie, we all know of and understand that. We conservatives, perhaps, even moreso -- as the white liberal elite would prefer to ghettoize us, as well.
But the fact is, all of these despicable things were done to blacks by WHO? The Democrat Party, that's WHO. So, don't go all holy and self-righteous on us, Little Richie.
If you really, really want to make amends for the terrible wrongs done to the blacks by the Democrat party, you could start by following Frederick Douglass' advice: "just leave us alone...for a hundred years."
But, no, in trying to compensate, instead you've destroyed the black family, devastated their schools and consigned them to second-class citizenship -- wards of the party, milked for their vote.
Don't give us your misguided racist bullshit, Richie.
