Mitt Romney eyes smaller footprint, later start for 2012

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is letting donors know it’ll be a while before he looks to 2012 — and that any presidential campaign he builds will have a much smaller staff than in 2008.

“People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and they’re not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign,” Romney told 245 of his top financial supporters on a conference call Thursday, a Romney aide told POLITICO. His team organized the call to connect with top supporters following a busy 2010 season and discuss Romney’s political future.

Romney also told supporters that his organization will be “smaller in scale than our last effort.”

The rationale, as Romney explained it: In 2008, he was a little-known figure who had to spend millions on a large organization if he was to compete against Arizona Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. In that cycle, he announced an exploratory committee in January 2007 and officially announced a bid in February.

This time, January and February will come and go without an announcement, he told his supporters — and he can plan a leaner staff because he’s now a leading national Republican figure and needs a team that can hang on through a prolonged primary campaign amid a crowded GOP field.

Joining him on the call were top staffers certain to be part of any operation, however small, including Beth Myers, his 2008 campaign manager; Spencer Zwick, who was his finance director; Matt Rhoades, who runs his Free and Strong America PAC; and Eric Fehrnstrom, his longtime spokesman.

Yep. He’s definitely signaling a message of fright to Sarah Palin, but Romney is a schemer. He wants to run.
He wants to be POTUS. He’s a fraud.

Willard Romney is the RINO’s front runner without a doubt, with The Huckster a close second.
Both would lose the election in 2012, and both would work hard to extinguish Tea Party fever forever!

The other thing that Mitt could be doing is setting himself up for the 2016 election cycle - As it looks now he would most likely not win the 2012 nomination with Sarah in the picture. He will hold out till late in 2010 to decide - when he confirms that cannot beat her he will bow out gracefully to Sarah then sabotage her in the general election. Waiting for four more years is not something he wants to do but as long as Sarah is in play for 2012 his prospects are limited. This scenario would clear the way for him in 2016 (providing his sabotage works). I don’t think we can underestimate this guys desire for the presidency.

Maybe Bob McDonnell? Frank Keating? Haley Barbour?

Puhleeeze..... Most Republican voters have never even heard of those people. At this point in the race, if you ain't got buzz, you ain't goin' anywhere.

Now that Willard is essentially conceding to Sarah Palin, it's all over, except for the whooping and hollering.

Religion is one thing I do not like to get into, but facts are facts. His religion has nothing to do with my reasons for finding him reprehensible.

He’s pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage and if that’s not enough, he’s also a liar.

It is every freepers responsibility to keep an eye on who is infiltrating us.

Absolutely. Funny how you can spot these people so easily, after being here for a few years. There are certain subtle things that give them away, which I won't discuss in public.

I'm not into giving them free advice on how to successfully pose as a real Freeper.

You are spot on Windflier - He has no courage or backbone.

I really dislike that Romney is trying to buddy buddy up with Marco Rubio as well. I think that is his dream running mate. Hopefully Rubio can see what Romney is all about.

I don’t want to see anyone who ran in 2008. We need new blood.

You dream of something that never was, and never will be, in US presidential politics.

Republican voters don't elect unknowns to the office of president. Democrats, on the other hand....

Excellent and I have clean hands...LOL.
I am trying my best to ignore trolls.
Andrea19 was holding out for “Jeb Bush.”
(Yes, I checked her forum posts, but did not reply to her.)
Good job, you guys!

Wish I had your confidence, but with 2 years left, there's a lot of dirty dealing to come....Think back how we were set up with McCain last time around.
Hopefully the Tea Party and true conservative Republicans can stop it this time around.

If they didn’t accept McCain, why do you think they’ll take Mitt?

When did McCain switch party affiliation to run as a Dem?
