Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is letting donors know itll be a while before he looks to 2012 and that any presidential campaign he builds will have a much smaller staff than in 2008.
People are exhausted from the 2010 election, and theyre not anxious to begin right away with the next campaign, Romney told 245 of his top financial supporters on a conference call Thursday, a Romney aide told POLITICO. His team organized the call to connect with top supporters following a busy 2010 season and discuss Romneys political future.
Romney also told supporters that his organization will be smaller in scale than our last effort.
The rationale, as Romney explained it: In 2008, he was a little-known figure who had to spend millions on a large organization if he was to compete against Arizona Sen. John McCain for the Republican nomination. In that cycle, he announced an exploratory committee in January 2007 and officially announced a bid in February.
This time, January and February will come and go without an announcement, he told his supporters and he can plan a leaner staff because hes now a leading national Republican figure and needs a team that can hang on through a prolonged primary campaign amid a crowded GOP field.
Joining him on the call were top staffers certain to be part of any operation, however small, including Beth Myers, his 2008 campaign manager; Spencer Zwick, who was his finance director; Matt Rhoades, who runs his Free and Strong America PAC; and Eric Fehrnstrom, his longtime spokesman.

“Romney also told supporters that his organization will be ‘smaller in scale than our last effort.’”
Last time around, Romney spent something like $25 million and ended up with roughly 30% of the vote.
How much “smaller” does he want to finish? :)
It’s odd isn’t it? “Hi! I am Mittens. I ran a few years ago with a battalion of campaign workers and lost. So this year, I am cutting back and keeping a low profile; I think pursuing the candidacy with a fraction of the staff I had before will work this time. Really it’s just anyone who will work for free. Want to donate?”
He’s a no balls draft dodger.
You’ve sniffed out the troll like I have, Vike. See my post #24.
;-)
IF Romney were honest, he’d challenge obama.
Romney ought to run as a democrat, so he could go back to being openly pro-abortion, pro-gay marriage and the two could debate romneycare versus obamacare.
I am far from a Palin supporter. That said, Mitt Romney represents the absolute worse politics and politicians have to offer. He's an opportunistic sleazebag, saying whatever he thinks it'll take to get elected. He's held pretty much every position on any issue one can think of.
Romney has a long history of happily trashing individual rights in the name of "progress". He's made no bones about wanting to restrict 2nd Amendment rights, for example.
The way Romney insisted that he was far more pro-choice than his opponent in the Massachusetts governor's race, grinning a huge grin as he discusses violently ending human lives... its enough to make the most pro-choice person sick to their stomach.
The kicker for me is when he equated his sons riding around in a luxury Winnebago campaigning for him to soldiers serving in the battlefield. As someone whose family has a long and distinguished history of military service, his words made my stomach turn. The man is a vile, nasty piece of work. None of his family has served in the military by the way. It's beneath them.
Mitt Romney lives a life completely devoid of morals or ethics. He'll say anything you want to hear if only you'll vote for him. Votes are the only thing Romney's money can't buy and he'll do anything and say anything to get them. He's a disgusting excuse for a human being.
You don't have to be a rabid Sarah Palin fan to think that Mitt Romney is a vile, slimy, immoral piece of human garbage not worthy of the office to which he aspires.
Agreed. Any ideas (besides current legislators)? Maybe Bob McDonnell? Frank Keating? Haley Barbour?
“Last time around, Romney spent something like $25 million and ended up with roughly 30% of the vote.”
Now that’s what I call a fiscal conservative and successful money manager! hahaha
I noticed that, Good job FRiend, Good Job.
It is every freepers responsibility to keep an eye on who is infiltrating us.
I’m still exhausted from Romney’s 2008 run. He should skip 2012, and give me a chance to get my insults lined out.
I don’t want to see anyone who ran in 2008. We need new blood.

But, of course! It's a brilliant strategy, considering that he lost the 2008 primary to the most uninspiring candidate we've had since Bob Dole.
Seriously ~ Mitt's out. He just announced to Sarah that he'll stand down, if she runs. He obviously knows that she is, otherwise he wouldn't have had to make this statement.
Look for a couple of other hopefuls to bow out soon, as well. Palin has simply outrun them all, even before the starting gun fires.
Yep, that’s precisely what he’s been attempting and you’ve hit on his new sheme! He’s waiting in the wings, hoping she will fall, so he can step in!
Not a chance. He’s no Sarah Palin and TEA Party Republicans won’t support him.
His hoof prints are all over the Sarah Palin smears. He was up to his neck in that politico hit piece on her. He even showed his guilt the very next day, by pontificating how awful unsourced articles are.
Can we get that footprint to just disappear?
It's going to be a miserable 2 years with the Rinos, Rats and MSM coming at us from every direction.
An active and momentum building Tea Party movement is a must.
Woo-Hoo!
Grate job and BTTT
Hush your mouth, Onyx! Don't go giving Mittens any big ideas! I think the Dems just might go for it.
If they didn’t accept McCain, why do you think they’ll take Mitt?
