The US government may require cars to include scrambling tech that would disable mobile-phone use by drivers, and perhaps passengers.
"I think it will be done," US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said on Wednesday morning, according to The Daily Caller. "I think the technology is there and I think you're going to see the technology become adaptable in automobiles to disable these cell phones."
LaHood is on a self-described "rampage" against distracted driving, and if making it impossible to use a mobile phone while in a car can save lives, he's all for it although, according to TDC, LaHood also emphasized the role of "personal responsibility."
In a Tuesday blog post announcing an online video series, "Faces of Distracted Driving", which presents first-person accounts of distracted-driving tragedies, LaHood noted that "Just last year, nearly 5,500 people were killed and 500,000 more were injured in distracted driving-related crashes.

This administration is filled with control freaks.
They want to strip-search us, and monitor, and eventually control our every movement.
It’s like a 1950s movie about the Soviets taking over.
So, I can eat a bacon chili cheeseburger while driving, but not use my hands-free phone?
Beam me up!
In the time it will take to implement something like this, cars will be driving themselves. Nothing to worry about.
“Rampaging” LaHood. Yes, that about sums it up. Damn communist tyrants.
Ray and Obama will be long gone before this can be implemented.
Then it will be just one of dozens of Obama’s ridiculous agenda items, tossed aside.
If it is implemented — IF — it will be swiftly reversed by the next administration. Maybe even by the current Congress.
So we could pull the jammer out of the car, hook it up to a 12 volt dry cell, and have some fun?
However, at the rate the dhimmicrats are “F”ing things up, we may still have the phones, but no gas for the cars...
Wow. Mobile phones have been in common in-car use for what? 20-25 years?
And these jackwagons think they can just decree them illegal, with no new enabling legislation?
It’s time for the insanity to stop.
Well, this policy would have effectively reduced the global population by at least one woman...
"Woman calls for help from trunk of car"
Guess she'd have been S.O.L.
He’s just getting started too; the next, albeit unmentioned ‘thing’ is built-in alcohol detector/Breathalyzer ...
What about all the Congress critters who have drivers???
They can use their cell phones??/
I know my brother has a hands-free cell phone in his car. Usually his companion does the talking for him when someone calls. I witnessed such behavior.
... I should add: we’re all going to have to ‘blow’ (to start) ...
Nice. Free cell phone scrambling tech when I start offering the after market removal service.
I got a better idea, how about cars that can’t be started by illegal aliens?
Its like a 1950s movie about the Soviets taking over.

Yes it is.
Here in SC they are trying to get jammers for the prisons since prisoners conduct illegal “business” on cell phones (including, in at least one case, arranging a “hit” on a witness). However, looks like it won’t fly due to various legal concerns...mostly possiblity of “leakage” to surrounding areas.
So...there won’t be jammer leakage around cars?
If it could be made to only work on the driver of a moving vehicle, I could support that.
“Great idea! If my daughter or wife is driving along a dark rural highway and a nutcase is trying to run them off the road, their cell phone will be disabled. Wonderful.”
Not a great time to be using a cell phone. Time to stop and shoot. When seconds count, the folks at 911, are, at best, minutes away
LaHood is a Republican.
