They fear that alienating Steele could cause headaches for the partys attempt to win back the White House in 2012.
Republican leaders have started to clamor for change atop the RNC while acknowledging that if Steele wages a tough fight for a second term as chairman, it could evolve into a politically messy spectacle.
Theres widespread concern about the appearance of dumping the chairman of the RNC for the wrong reasons particularly the first African-American chairman of the RNC when we have the first African-American president, said former Rep. Vin Weber (R-Minn.).
Weber added, In politics, perception is everything.
Steele has not declared he will seek a second term at the RNC, but he has not ruled it out. The former Maryland lieutenant governor has been vocal since the Nov. 2 elections in promoting the RNCs role in delivering Republican victories this fall, triggering speculation he will mount a bid.

They are a lost cause and we do not need to PC worry about them.
Instead of focusing on the blacks that cause worry, why doesn't the GOP promote those more rock-solid like Allen West?
Can someone just tell them to please stop being pussies?
Steele isn’t the problem. It’s the RINO club that the RNC has become that is the problem.
To state that “we will not get the blacks” is to imply that black americans are terminally stupid and cannot possibly be reasoned with...ever. It’s a disgusting perception.
Imagine what could have been if such was in place.
“They are a lost cause and we do not need to PC worry about them.:
We could have Jesse Jackson leading the GOP and we wouldn’t get the black vote. We need to dispense with the whiny, woosy crap.
Steele traveled the country with Palin. I heard him speak very well and off the cuff to the Tea Partiers, and he finally has come around. He gets it now. I’d rather have him than one of the establishment-Karl Rove types.
This is beyond stupid. When are these dumbbells going to learn that you just do the right thing and let the chips fall where they may. Steele was an embarrassment and did a pathetic job - this was obvious for all to see.
The Republican leadership is no leadership at all if they can’t make even the most basic argument effectively. Stand on principle and trust your ability to make the case.
Bingo! The RNC needs to be cleaned out top to bottom. Then, the new overseers should turn to people like Grover Norquist, Mark Lloyd (of the Tea Party Federation), and the leadership at Americans for Progress to put it back together.
Restructuring will be a tight-rope walk. On the one hand, you need to have people who are not infected with the Inside the Beltway Syndrome. On the other hand, you don’t want a bunch of sociopathic kooks like the ALG political director coming in and creating a bilious bunker mentality.
When I became the Director of Communications for the Senate Republican Conference some years back, I ended up having to fire everyone who worked there because of their insider game-playing. But, I was careful to bring in people who knew how the system worked — and knew how to work with (and around) those inside the system.
Clearly Steele has to go along with everyone else in the building. But, it has to be handled with a scalpel, not a meat ax.
Only about 30% of received contributions are being used for candidates, so yes, Steele is a big problem. Any organization that does fund raising and has 70% admin costs is being mismanaged from the top. Or is corrupt.
Also, he is apparently a big spender, spending on himself for 1st Class airline tickets, chartered planes, and fancy hotel suites.
Theyre not the issue. It's the mush headed white independent/liberal females who are governed almost wholly by emotional responses to superficial news items. Theyre the ones the pols are worried about. Their vote is available and pivotal , believe it or not.
What’s Alan Keyes doing these days? Maybe we could get him to do the job.
Ken Blackwell would be a better choice.
“To state that we will not get the blacks is to imply that black americans are terminally stupid and cannot possibly be reasoned with...ever. Its a disgusting perception.”
Since when does stating something which is true — that by reason of historical fact it is obvious that blacks do not and will not vote for Republican candidates — become a “disgusting perception”?
Interesting article to read that discusses the impact of the “changing demographic colors of America” insofar as the future is concerned:

If the RNC had really wanted a black Chairman, they could have elected Ken Blackwell, who is also conservative and competent, but they chose Steele instead.
Race issue again. Is he doing the job that he is required to do, Yes or No. what does his being of African descent pertain to his job duties, are they subpar or excelling in achieving any success or is he failing. I do not give a rats backside of his race, is he or is he not doing his job. Is the RNC head an affirmative action position. If it is than I would like to apply for it and be granted it to because I am a White Anglo Saxon Protestant Male whom happens to disabled and a veteran. See affirmative action has its fallbacks. Look at the 2008 presidency it was an affirmative action presidency and vicepresidency the first black, the first woman running for president, the democratics allowed the first black to purchase the presidency. the first vice president Biden was and is an imbecile - he is mentally challenged. On the republican side the first old geezer running for president and the first woman running as a vice presidential GOP candidate. how has the first blacks in leadership have been in the uSA president - is incompetent and Steele with the RNC - incompetent. Get them both out of office and stop worrying about offending the black voter. Their color is no reason to keep them if they are failing to do the positions that they selected to do and campaigned for and are failing to do admirably and are incomptent.
He also ran a ridiculously inept campaign. As his reward for screwing up, he was made RNC Chair. It was a "Hey Look! We got one, too!" moment by the equally ridiculous GOP.
Dump him. He's a toad.
“To state that we will not get the blacks is to imply that black americans are terminally stupid and cannot possibly be reasoned with...ever. Its a disgusting perception.”
You’re absolutely right. Only about 96% of blacks might qualify as “terminally stupid and cannot possibly be reasoned with...ever.” The 4% who did NOT vote for Hussein...well that’s a different story! Perhaps you should remember that it is the left—that is DEMOCRATS—who have spent 60 years keeping blacks ignorant, dependent and therefore good little democrat voters.
