WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Food and Drug Administration will rule that caffeine is an unsafe food additive to alcoholic beverages, effectively making products such as Four Loko and Joose prohibited for sale in the United States, according to Senator Charles Schumer of New York. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission plans to notify manufacturers that they are engaged in the potential illegal marketing of unsafe alcoholic drinks, Schumer said in a statement. Joose maker United Brands argues that the product contains less caffeine than colas and isn't aware of injury or harm associated with its products.

Stay away from my Irish Coffee!
Where is the authority to do this in the Constitution?
The manufacturers should just start putting alcohol in caffeinated drinks.
The manufacturers should just start putting alcohol in caffeinated drinks.
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
But...but...when I’m drunk...I go for the coffee...and the couch..
Just remember:
Anything statist Democrats can do by edict, Teaparty/Republicans can un-do by edict.
Anything. It is critical, the good people on our side focus on that, and say so. Make them commit to it, publicly.
Every executive order. Every EPA rule. All of it!
Repeal it all, on day one, of the new administration.
Have (all) the paperwork ready for January 2013. Then let the signing begin.
Pretty pointless move, the people can mix their own rum and cokes if that’s what they want.
Unless they intend to make that illegal too?
There goes yagerbomb fridays!
Just another tentacle of the fed that needs to be eliminated.
Perhaps I’m the dense one here, but on what authority is Chuck-U, a member of the Legislative Branch, announcing what a department of the Executive Branch is going to do? Are they now compelled to comply with his announcement? Who asked him anyway and why?
I just wish this guy would just go away.
What about old favorites including Kahlua and Tia Maria? Ridiculous!
Doesn’t Kahlua have caffeine in it? If so, would that be banned?
The Nanny State is alive and well. FDA needs to go away!
Just another tentacle of the fed that needs to be eliminated.

Can’t we just throw salt on the whole octopus and make the entire thing go away?
So I click on the link to read the story and what comes up? an ad for Starbucks :)
It's made from coffee beans so I'd presume there's at least a little caffeine in Kahlua. Would it be banned? Well, it's unlikely the geniuses behind this effort even considered Kahlua when they decided to make a blanket prohibition on those alcoholic energy drinks sold in colorful cans that appeal to younger drinkers.
Schumer banning Joose? Interesting.
Back in the Prohibition days when it was illegal to sell alcohol, manufacturers would sell beer-making kits, with all the necessary ingredients included. On the package was a dire warning: CAUTION: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE CONTENTS OF THIS PACKAGE BE MIXED WITH FIVE GALLONS OF BOILING WATER, ALLOWED TO FERMENT FOR FIVE DAYS AND DRAWN OFF INTO BOTTLES.
