FDA to bar caffeine in alcoholic drinks
MarketWatch ^

Posted on 11/17/2010 7:00:51 AM PST by janetjanet998

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- The Food and Drug Administration will rule that caffeine is an unsafe food additive to alcoholic beverages, effectively making products such as Four Loko and Joose prohibited for sale in the United States, according to Senator Charles Schumer of New York. Additionally, the Federal Trade Commission plans to notify manufacturers that they are engaged in the potential illegal marketing of unsafe alcoholic drinks, Schumer said in a statement. Joose maker United Brands argues that the product contains less caffeine than colas and isn't aware of injury or harm associated with its products.

The manufacturers should just start putting alcohol in caffeinated drinks.

Just remember:

Anything statist Democrats can do by edict, Teaparty/Republicans can un-do by edict.

Anything. It is critical, the good people on our side focus on that, and say so. Make them commit to it, publicly.

Every executive order. Every EPA rule. All of it!

Repeal it all, on day one, of the new administration.

Have (all) the paperwork ready for January 2013. Then let the signing begin.

Pretty pointless move, the people can mix their own rum and cokes if that’s what they want.

Unless they intend to make that illegal too?

Perhaps I’m the dense one here, but on what authority is Chuck-U, a member of the Legislative Branch, announcing what a department of the Executive Branch is going to do? Are they now compelled to comply with his announcement? Who asked him anyway and why?

I just wish this guy would just go away.

Doesn’t Kahlua have caffeine in it? If so, would that be banned?

It's made from coffee beans so I'd presume there's at least a little caffeine in Kahlua. Would it be banned? Well, it's unlikely the geniuses behind this effort even considered Kahlua when they decided to make a blanket prohibition on those alcoholic energy drinks sold in colorful cans that appeal to younger drinkers.

Back in the Prohibition days when it was illegal to sell alcohol, manufacturers would sell beer-making kits, with all the necessary ingredients included. On the package was a dire warning: CAUTION: UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD THE CONTENTS OF THIS PACKAGE BE MIXED WITH FIVE GALLONS OF BOILING WATER, ALLOWED TO FERMENT FOR FIVE DAYS AND DRAWN OFF INTO BOTTLES.
