Motor Trend names Chevy Volt its car of the year
Washington Examiner ^ | AP

Posted on 11/16/2010 10:56:33 AM PST by theruleshavechanged

Motor Trend says the Volt has some of the most advanced engineering ever seen in an American car. The Volt can run up to 50 miles in pure electric mode before a backup gas engine kicks in to give it more range.

Motor Trend also said Tuesday that the car is a great value. It costs $33,500 with a federal tax credit, but will likely be cheaper to run than a traditional hybrid. The Volt goes on sale next month.

I wonder how many people are going to cancel their subscriptions after this. What a farce.

This is truly amazing. I actually laughed when I saw the title.

It is clearly a “Jump the Shark” moment for the magazine.

For most of the existence of the Ford Mustang*, only one model had won the "Car of the Year"...the 1974 model (widely regarded as the worst and least collectible model of all.)

*I believe one of the later models has also won. (I could look it up, but mehh.)

Can’t wait to drive one.
My company bought one, if only to tear the thing apart upon receipt.

We were asked to bid on the electric motor, but declined because GM wouldn’t guarantee the required payback in unit sales. Money loser for GM and its American “investors”.

I see they also gave the Chrysler K-Car as the car of the year in 1981, so they’re not exactly geniuses in handing out awards to deserving cars.

I used to read MT, and Car+Driver.

I always got the feeling that MT was just an advertising branch of AUTO Manufacturing Industry.

“Motor Trend says the Volt has some of the most advanced engineering ever seen in an American car.”

Well Gee. I guess if an amount of “advanced technology” is the lead criteria for a car, and not the cost, then maybe we should all have space shuttle level “advanced technology” in our cars, and let Obama subsidize ALL our auto purchases. /sarc
