New York state manufacturing unexpectedly plunged in November, the first contraction since July 2009 when the US economy exited recession, official data showed Monday. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported its manufacturing activity index dropped to minus 11.1 points in November, from a positive 15.7 points in the previous month. The Empire State Manufacturing Survey index is considered a bellwether of the manufacturing sector which has been a key strength in the economic recovery. It was the first time the index fell below zero since July 2009, the month after the worst recession in decades was officially declared over. The sharp 27-point decline surprised analysts, who had forecast on average a slip to a positive 11.7-point reading. The new orders index plummeted to minus 24.4 points, from positive 12.9 points in October.

What a bunch of JACK WAGONS! You think the fact they raised the taxes in NY had anything to do with a loss of revenue? When are the numbers for the corporations leaving California and New York going to come out?

Hmmm, it’s been 18 years now, and I’ve had hundreds of people on this forum tell me manufacturing jobs weren’t important.

This is the 21st Century. We don’t need manufacturing jobs! /s

Funny that they noticed this decline right after the election.

Just like they noticed that Caifornia's budget deficit is double what they thought it would be vs. the estimate prior to November 2nd.

Give the regime a couple more years and they'll fake these numbers along with faking inflation and unemployment numbers.

Upstate New York State has been in permanent Great Depression for years, ruled over by the crooked democrat party looting the wealth.

There is a growing disillusionment with free trade and globalism. When NAFTA was passed in the ‘90s (and when China started to become a major economic power), it was mostly opposed by blue-collar workers who’s jobs were directly affected. The college-educated white-collar crowd didn’t really care as much, since it didn’t cost them anything. Their reaction was along the lines of “Ah, no skin off my nose. Who wants to tighten bolts on an assembly line anyway? Besides, cheap Chinese and Mexican goods rule!”

Now we see white-collar jobs sent to places like India. Those guys quickly started turning against offshoring when it began to affect them.

They need to make gay marriage legal that will boost the service ecomomy in NY..... who needs manufacturing when gay marriage and government jobs are the answer!

My brother lives in Claremont, NY in a modest home, Engineer at IBM for the last 28 years, he and his wife pay $13,145 a year in taxes to the town and local schools on top of payroll, state income and sales taxes. That is just nuts.

Another kick in the Jimmy, said Brother in on jury duty with a retired corrections office, retired at age 46, did his twenty years,no college, full benefits, makes 65% of my brothers annual salary while retired from the State of NY. A retired CO at age 46 on the retirement NY dole compared to my brother who is working full time professional Engineer, RPI graduate 3.6GPA,MBA from Marist College 3.88GPA. Reference Brother is going Galt. In several months he will have the house paid off, and on the market and he is leaving Corporate America, he is going galt. America can’t survive with hardworking people like him just giving up. Going to be interesting these next several years.

NY/NYC raised tobacco taxes to the point that a pack of cigs in NYC cost $11.60. Guess what happened? Tobacco sales plunged 27%. The surprise was that “they” were surprised! OMG-LOL
