Congratulations, Sarah Palin: “Refudiate” Named Word of the Year
ABC ^ | NOVEMBER 15, 2010 | The Note

Posted on 11/15/2010 12:54:19 PM PST by onyx

Sarah Palin has officially changed the modern lexicon, one tweet at a time. While one might expect the New Oxford American Dictionary to refudiate the former Alaska governor’s favorite verb, today they embraced it, announcing “refudiate” as the official 2010 word of the year.

"From a strictly lexical interpretation of the different contexts in which Palin has used 'refudiate,' we have concluded that neither 'refute' nor 'repudiate' seems consistently precise, and that 'refudiate' more or less stands on its own, suggesting a general sense of 'reject.' "the New Oxford American Dictionary said in a press release.

Palin’s use of “refudiate,” launched critics into a frenzy when she first posted the made up verb on her Twitter page over the summer.

“Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate,” the 2008 vice presidential nominee tweeted in July, launching a string of harsh responses from the media. While some called Palin’s linguistic mash up egregious others said she would never hear the end of it (look who’s laughing now).

Palin later joked at her own expense, "'refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!"

Here's one she made up the other day (about Kathleen Parker admitting she led the fight to discredit palin):

Mediaite is wrong. Mr. Chrostopher needs to get hikself an OED. She used the word "admittance" properly.

Congratulations, Sarah! You are now in very select company. Some others are serious/fun. Gary Larson, who drew the Far Side, was so honored when the word ‘thagomizer’ was deemed as the official scientific name for the spikes on the tail of a stegosaurus.

They didn’t seem to notice “corpse” used for “corps” (should have been pronounced “core”).

LOL. Not a clue. You are so right about that!
She’s way ahead of all of them and smarter than all of them put together.

Yes, I seem to recall someone else did that too,...RWR and also GWB!

She’s on a refudiating roll.

Very nice that she was shown fair treatment: that her word *is* word of the year!

*Do you guys know how this will, indeed, aggravate the HELL out of the intelligentsia in Universities around the globe?
I hadn’t thought about *that*!!! I’ll post my version of Sarah’s reaction.*

THAT’S MY SAME REACTION!

I will use refudiate at least once a day, but never in reference to Palin.

Now, if I can get “schraggle” approved by Webster, I’d be happy.

A lot of words are sometimes coined accidentally.

How about blanchor? A word "invented" by a radio host who meant to say black anchor when pointing out how the MSM have virtually zero -- all the while screaming "Racist!" at Republicans who have key members of all races. He immediately corrected himself and moved on. I noticed because I love portmanteau words and puns.

From an Internet source:

Portmanteau words are derived by combining portions of two or more separate words.

It was Lewis Carroll in Through The Looking Glass who coined the word portmanteau to describe them. In the book Humpty Dumpty explains that: "Well, 'slithy' means 'lithe and slimy'. 'Lithe' is the same word as 'active'. You see, it's like a portmanteau - there are two meanings packed into one word." Among several other words Carroll created chortle (a combination of 'chuckle' and 'snort') and galumph ( a combination of 'gallop' and 'triumph').

Where has that little out house pest {pissant} been hiding?

With Sarah gaining 5 M viewers and having her new word "refutiate" go into the Oxford Dictionary the little pissant must be thinking of jumping into the toilet bowl and riding one out.

..."peaceful Muslims" is definitely the oxymoron of the decade.

More like the oxymoron of the last 1431 years or so.

Right you are, woo-hoo!

I looked through the articles deciding which one to post, and when I spotted ABC, saying “Congrats Sarah Palin” - my decision was made.

About time she is treated fairly and “refudiate” certainly deserves the Word Of The Year honor!
