Congratulations, Sarah Palin: “Refudiate” Named Word of the Year
ABC ^ | NOVEMBER 15, 2010 | The Note

Posted on 11/15/2010 12:54:19 PM PST by onyx

Sarah Palin has officially changed the modern lexicon, one tweet at a time. While one might expect the New Oxford American Dictionary to refudiate the former Alaska governor’s favorite verb, today they embraced it, announcing “refudiate” as the official 2010 word of the year.

"From a strictly lexical interpretation of the different contexts in which Palin has used 'refudiate,' we have concluded that neither 'refute' nor 'repudiate' seems consistently precise, and that 'refudiate' more or less stands on its own, suggesting a general sense of 'reject.' "the New Oxford American Dictionary said in a press release.

Palin’s use of “refudiate,” launched critics into a frenzy when she first posted the made up verb on her Twitter page over the summer.

“Peaceful Muslims, pls refudiate,” the 2008 vice presidential nominee tweeted in July, launching a string of harsh responses from the media. While some called Palin’s linguistic mash up egregious others said she would never hear the end of it (look who’s laughing now).

Palin later joked at her own expense, "'refudiate,' 'misunderestimate,' 'wee-wee'd up.' English is a living language. Shakespeare liked to coin new words too. Got to celebrate it!"

Thanks for reminding me. I knew I saved it for a special reason! I just forgot to note the reason.

She’s at DWTS right now. I pinged you of course!

What makes her not presidential compared to Obama? Is it her political record as governor and executive experience? Please tell me Romulus in detail. I am curious to know why

She didn't coin corrupt bastards and that's two words.

Sarah Palin's strategery gets her completely misunderestimated every time.

This is one of the real strengths of english, as a language. We’re not too proud to steal from other languages if they have a word we can make use of, and if a mash-up allows for greater precision in conveying an idea, we welcome the addition to the language.

We are practically the only language without an official “Academie”.

Which is why French is nearly a dead language, notwithstanding le hamburger and the fact that it is spoken by millions.

Perhaps zombie language is a better descriptor. The Academie strangles the life out of it.

That’s our Sarah!  Once again setting the pace for the rest to follow.  She is a bona fide newsmaker - an influential woman.

Would you like to tell me what “refudiate” means?

Y’all are aware that “refute” and “repudiate” have very different meanings, right? Do you know what these words mean? Have you thought about how they can be reconciled?

Remember the Clinton Administration, when FReepers were yelling their heads off about what words mean? That was all a bunch of BS, right?

Amazing! I've been compared to all of those people too (and Chuck Norris). Well, maybe not Luke Skywalker. I always thought he was kind of a whiny wimp.

I was not commenting so much on SP being a playwright and poet so much as I was on the English language and the fact that the club of people who coin new words is quite large.

Whatever her faults, using refudiate in a sentence is not necessarily one of them.

A somewhat irritating voice is one of them, but compared to the shrill voice of Hillary with its dagger like, brain piercing quality, SP's voice is like a choir of angelic hosts.

There! One more to add to the list: Angel.
