One and done: To be a great president, Obama should not seek reelection in 2012

This is a critical moment for the country. From the faltering economy to the burdensome deficit to our foreign policy struggles, America is suffering a widespread sense of crisis and anxiety about the future. Under these circumstances, Obama has the opportunity to seize the high ground and the imagination of the nation once again, and to galvanize the public for the hard decisions that must be made. The only way he can do so, though, is by putting national interests ahead of personal or political ones.

To that end, we believe Obama should announce immediately that he will not be a candidate for reelection in 2012.

If the president goes down the reelection road, we are guaranteed two years of political gridlock, at a time when we can ill afford it. But by explicitly saying he will be a one-term president, Obama can deliver on his central campaign promise of 2008, draining the poison from our culture of polarization and ending the resentment and division that have eroded our national identity and common purpose.

We do not come to this conclusion lightly. But it is clear, we believe, that the president has largely lost the consent of the governed. The midterm elections were effectively a referendum on the Obama presidency. And even if it was not an endorsement of a Republican vision for America, the drubbing the Democrats took was certainly a vote of no confidence in Obama and his party. The president has almost no credibility left with Republicans and little with independents.

This is not the Washington Post...this is 2 Dem operatives.

These 2 wrote another WP article very critical of Obama the week before the election. I wish I could link it but I don't have the reference.

I don't care about what the Democrats or Obama wants, but in 2012 we need conservatives to get lots more Senate and House seats along with the Presidency.

We need to roll back Obamacare and other Abomination's.

If there is no mass Republican majority with a President, then we are all kind of doomed with the crap Democrats have shoved through against the will of the people.

I don’t know. But I see a 1980 type situation developing here where he will get a challenger in the primaries. They really hurt the Democratic party looking at the numbers from 1980. Carter had to fend off Kennedy to the point he was out of bullets and wasnt even able to make it close in the general election. but he would have lost either way.

Thanks for the clarification.

Doug and Pat need to wake up, smell the coffee and realize that the Democrat Party they once knew no longer exists...

One of the authors, Pat Caddell, is just about the last of what i m ight call the principled “Big L” liberals. He has always struck me as an honorable man with whom I just about 100% disagree with regarding political matters.

He has been positively, and publically, BLASTING Obama for several months, now, in print and on TV.

This does not surprise me coming from him.

What surprised me was that the WaPo would publish it.

Pat Cadell a conservative Democrat wrote this and makes sense. Therefore Obozo will ignore this and will continue to fail epically.

This is not a WaPo op-ed. It is an opinion piece submitted by Pat Cadell and Doug Schoen, two Democrat pollsters who show up frequently on Fox News expressing very heterodox views about the Democrat party. Both Pat and Doug have been very critical of the Obama Team regarding strategy, policy and public relations. It isn't surprising that they would recommend that O call it quits after one term.

“To be a GREAT president....” Some day it might be interesting to schedule a visit to the universe inhabited by leftists.

This sounds like a boatload of cow flop. The writer is positing that Obama’s announcement that he is not seeking re-election will lead to true problem solving via bi-partisanship. Bah-loney. The author knows full well two things:

1) Obama is a hardcore leftist and will work to cement and entrench the awful programs the Pelosi congress passed for him, under the guise of “helping” the nation

2) That Obama isn’t up to the task of solving the nation’s problems as he has proven himself to be an incompetent: an ivory tower warrior who has surrounded himself with a coterie of ivory tower warriors who have no clue how things work outside the classroom.

To be a great newspaper, the Washington Post should cease publication immediately.
