ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- A spokeswoman for the U.S. attorney's office in Maryland said federal authorities have arrested Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson.

Federal authorities told WBAL-TV 11 News that Johnson and his wife, Leslie, were arrested Friday. The reasons behind the arrest have not been announced.

Federal authorities also said the FBI and Internal Revenue Service are investigating the matter.

No charges have been announced. 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller said there may be a court appearance for Johnson later in the day, at which time more details will emerge.

Johnson, 61, has been the county executive since 2002. He was the county's state's attorney for eight years before becoming the county's chief executive.

Has he been taken to the Ministry of Love?

Kudos to the reporter for a very detailed account. We get the guy's age, how long he has been the county executive, and even his previous job. I can't think of anything they left out. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, we know he is a democrat, because if he was a republican, it would be in the headline or first sentence.

A friend who used to work in PG County claimed that Jack Johnson was “bought and paid for” by developers. Probably real-estate related.

No need to report a party affiliation in PG County because there are no Republicans in PG County. The safe assumption is that he’s a Dem.

Jack Johnson is out this year anyway (term limits) but I don’t think there was even a Republican running for County Exec this year.

Prince George’s County is a sad sad place, from what I hear. It’s really gone downhill in the past few decades.

National Harbor -- That's all you need to know.

He actually wasn't too bad when we lived there. He was willing to back the cops against discrimination charges, although he let them go overboard a couple of times, beating UMD students and shooting dogs in fake drug drops.

Just got off the phone with a friend who works in an office with a bunch of PG-County employees.

One of them claims it’s drug-related. No further details.

From TDB.com:

George’s County Executive Jack Johnson and his wife, county councilmember-elect Leslie Johnson, after raiding Johnson’s home and offices on Friday.

Federal agents executed 13 search warrants today as part of a far-ranging, two-year investigation into corruption in Prince George’s County government related to land and housing deals, according to a federal law enforcement source.

WTOP is reporting that a source close to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Baltimore says the investigation is linked to a developer who sought to involve Jack Johnson in a land deal at the Greenbelt Metro station. The investigation is also linked to the transfer of a residential property involving Jack Johnson, the source says.

The source said the Johnsons were arrested on suspicion of obstruction of justice and evidence tampering after allegedly destroying evidence related to probe. Jack Johnson was led away from his home in handcuffs this afternoon.

A plumber called to the Johnson residence said he was called by the FBI to see if any evidence had been flushed down toilets. Shortly before he left the home, the plumber said he hadn’t found anything in the search. He was on the scene for about 45 minutes.
