China could overtake America as the worlds biggest economy within two years, according to a leading financial think tank. As growth in the U.S. slows down to a virtual standstill, Chinas economy is revving up into double digits, the Conference Board said in a report published today.
In purely dollar terms, it is going to take much longer than two years for Chinas $5 trillion economy to match up to the $15 trillion output in the US.
Even if the Chinese can sustain their current growth, it would take another ten years.

That and the US is doing its damnedest to keep manufacturing out-of-country.
The worst part about this is that American-style freedom will be as discredited as Soviet-style communism was 20 years ago if China ends up racing ahead of the US. Hopefully though, China's demographic crisis resulting from the one-child policy will manifest itself soon and give the west some breathing space to plan a counter-attack, if there are some statesmen with the balls and the nounce to put a plan together and execute it...
China and India combined have less than 1/3 of our GNP and several times our population. If Obama can get wages down to 2 dollars a day and one bowl of rice they may have a chance. Otherwise...not so much.
Red Chnia the world's new superpower. Ho hum.
I’ve said time and time again, that the Chinese have been keeping their real economic figures private because thye don’t really HAVE to report their real figures. They’ve been keeping things down and secret. The press mentions the dead cities, the fact that the economy is a ‘bubble,’ but they don’t have the access that the bureaucrats have. Thye aren’t talking about how things are really going because they are playing their cards close to their chest.
Countries with larger populations have greater potential than ones with smaller ones. When I went to Sweden recently, I was profoundly impressed by how how efficient and industrious they were as a people, and how back in the 17th century they were considered a great power. The only problem was, they were punching well above their natural weight, and could not sustain it. If not for demographics, I honestly believe they would have been the mightiest country that every was. But with a population that could scarcely be measured in millions, they can and could only really ever hope to be a mid-rank power.....
So, what do you think their real figures might indicate?
I would have to state that the economy is likely on more solid footing than they state. I don’t know any figures, but I’m sure that the Chinese are ensuring that the figures they publish are actually lower than the real ones. For instance, lets say that the Chinese post ten percent growth, it is likely at LEAST fifteen to twenty percent. The boom they are experiencing is likely the result of a carefully thought out plan and they don’t have half the population living on credit and loans.
They aren’t telling the planet because they are waiting for the right moment to strike, economically or politically. They are watching the US destroy itself and aren’t going to interfere in that. They are concentrating on keeping themselves out of the fray when the final trainwreck occurs. When it does, depending on how the citizenry here handle it, their reaction will correspond accordingly.
If we pull ourselves up and out of this mess by our bootstraps, the Chinese won’t think of picking a fight or trying anything that would provoke a confrontation. If we remain weak and in a mess, the Chinese will come forward as a major power and start throwing their weight around, leaving us with no to little choice but to comply with their demands and terms.
Right now they are watching and waiting, likely wary of trying anything, but will strike once they are able to take the top spot in the leadership of world politics. With Obama in cahrge, we are weakening, but it is likely that if the Pubbies who were elected, things might change since Obama could end up impeached. Biden will get into the position of President, but that doesn’t mean that Biden will remain in office past 2012.
We have just had a huge election upset and I am sure that it has put the swaggering out of the Chinese bureaucrats. Aemrican politics can be very unpredicatble, but with that comes a mistrust of business because the government isn’t simply electing Presidents that implement foreign and domestic policy while leaving general society to itself, but interfering in the routines of general society. As long as there remains instability with government policy that interferes in business/schooling, etc., businesses are going to go where htey are left alone.
Now in China businesses aren’t persecuted and interfered with as long as they follow the law and don’t disrupt society in general. Since the government there worries more about the military and ensuring stability, businesses will continue to go there and thrive, providing jobs and prosperity. The figures are likely higher than is officially reported, not lower or artificially inflated for propaganda purposes.
So you think they are downplaying their prosperity, less the American people get shocked into realising that their nation is in imminent danger of being surpassed, and therefore actually do something about it?
and its not just Walmart.....most everything not food in Costco is from China.....
they've become a powerhouse because we've... forgotten how a free market is supposed to work.
We've regulated and taxed ourselves nearly to death. We have anti-energy, anti-business and anti-liberty legislation in place from the local to the federal level.
The Chinese didn't do that to us, crony capitalism did.
That, but also because they are simply discreet. As for Americans doing something about it, look at how unprepared we were when the Japanese bombed us, but look at how well and fast we mobilized.
No point in being able to mobilise fast if your adversary buries you before you have time to realise what is going on...
