Agreed. But we are at the mercy of PC sickness.

Pilot unions are encouraging pilots to opt out because of their already increased radiation exposure from flying constantly and the numerous times they would be required on a monthly basis to go through the scanners.

According to a thread from the other day, they do increase the risk for cancer especially skin cancers. Of course, they are down playing it.

Zero. It doesn’t use xrays

Actually, it does:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-1290527/Airport-body-scanners-deliver-radiation-dose-20-times-higher-thought.html

Full body scanners at airports could increase your risk of skin cancer, experts warn.

The X-ray machines have been brought in at Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow.

But scientists say radiation from the scanners has been underestimated and could be particularly risky for children.

They say that the low level beam does deliver a small dose of radiation to the body but because the beam concentrates on the skin - one of the most radiation-sensitive organs of the human body - that dose may be up to 20 times higher than first estimated.........

The most likely risk from the airport scanners is a common type of skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma, according to the academic

There is no radiation used in the body scanners!

Then how do they work?

You’ll have to ask a TSA agent abou that.

But I do agree that people need to be vocal in their complaints—enough pressure could make this go away.

The more likely outcome is some muslim group making a big enough fuss to get all muslim appearing passengers exempted.

We go through all this asinine, time wasting, intrusive, and probably ineffective screening, all so that mohammedans can fly on airplanes when they aren’t actually carrying bomb parts.

“protocol” is not the word Id use to describe the breakdown that is being described by numerous traveling victims. Did you watch the youtube interview?

I speak as one who is ALWAYS pulled out of line, a retired female blonde military officer traveling with 2 kids. I guess I hit a lot of the “protocol” diversity buttons in apprehending the next great terrorist recruit.

I know when I travel (which is on hold for now because of good ol fashioned modesty and concerns over modesty for an adolescent daughter and son) it is barefoot in rubber flip flops with no belt or jewelry. Underwear being the next traveling item to go.

And no, I don't care to scream at semi literate gubmint cattle prod workers with a attitude who are looking at me and my children naked because they are only following orders.

Some brave local Sheriff needs to file sexual assault charges against a couple of TSA screeners in his jurisdiction. That will have Big Sis upchucking her Wheaties.

Exactly! That is a radiation, differing only in frequency from X-rays. In fact, it more closely resembles radar ... just like the frequencies used in microwave ovens.

People are under the misconception that microwaves are harmless. It just isn't true.

*One woman described how agents grabbed and twisted her breasts.*

Looks like there could a lot of lawsuits on something like this.
I would hope some personal civil suits against the gropers as well.

Some people are concerned with exposure to radiation emitted by backscatter X-rays and may fear being exposed to "dangerous level of radiation if they get backscattered too often".[12] The energy being emitted by a backscatter X-ray is a type of ionizing radiation that damages chemical bonds. Ionizing radiation is considered a non-threshold carcinogen, although it remains difficult to quantify the risk of low radiation exposures.[23]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backscatter_X-ray

That's not what Wiki says.

Herein lies a legitimate question.

LIFETIME dosage applies to ionizing radiation.

So, *DO* the backscatter imagers employ ionizing radiation? If yes at what levels/strengths?

We need to keep in mind the FACT that whilst flying in a plane we always receive a measurable dose of ionizing radiation from the sun and our atmosphere.

NET: we need and deserve a legitimate, non-TSA answer to this question: do these scanners emit ionizing radiation?

*Security in name only is what we have and it is sheer luck or a gift of God if anything is discovered.*

And yet, hundreds or thousands of OTM’s stream over the Mexican border and 0bama and Hitlery sue Arizona for trying to protect the citizens of the US for trying to stop them.

Am I at Woodstock? Did someone give me the brown acid?
When am I going to wake up from the Felliniesque nightmare?!?!

I choose to drive.
Don’t know how fliers do it.

I agree. I live in NJ and have grandchildren in Texas, which means 3 days of driving in each direction. That cuts the hell out of a one week trip. So, I hold my tongue and put up with the indignities two or three times a year. The fact that I served for 4 years in the Air Force, and had a Secret clearance, in no way distinguishes me from some guy making his eighth visit to Yemen or Pakistan "on business." Unless they adopt intelligent profiling, these indignities will only get worse.

Really the problem has nothing to do w/ airport security and everything to do w/ securing our borders & having sane immigration policies. The airport thing is another govt jerk knee response to a far bigger and different problem. Considering the govt response to 9/11 think how very very bad it’ll be when terrorists try other venues of attack. Let say they blow a mall up. Will we all have to line up for body scans to enter? Will mall cops be federalized? The foolishness is pretty much endless esp when govt employes are involved. Pretty much its sanity out the door along w/ our few remaining freedoms. Do we want peace? If we can all agree on a ‘yes’ answer then the way to start is to seal our borders. Then we can go after all those millions who came here illegally.
