BOSTON—The Raytheon Co. is laying off employees just days after Gov. Deval Patrick denied asking the company to delay terminations until after the state elections.

The Associated Press asked Patrick three days before the election if he'd heard about pending layoffs at Raytheon. He said it was just a rumor.

He bristled when asked if he requested Raytheon delay any terminations, saying the company was adding jobs.

I hope this isn’t a precursor to the rest of the defense industry.

Sudbury, Marlborough, Tewksbury, Lexington. I'm not sure all of those are still active, but they all were within the past 10 years.

People knew about these layoffs weeks ago. I suppose the details didn't come out until now, but it wasn't much of a secret.

-The announcement follows three other rounds of layoffs announced by Massachusetts employers in the immediate aftermath of last week’s elections.

Lab services company Charles River Laboratories and biotechnology firms Biogen Idec and Genzyme have made work force reductions totaling more than 1,000 jobs since Nov. 3, the day after Patrick was re-elected. Raytheon wouldn’t divulge the size of its work force reduction.

The cuts affected jobs inside and outside Massachusetts, where Raytheon has more than 13,000 employees.

Patrick administration officials verbally denied receiving so-called WARN notices, which are filed with the state when an employer prepares for a layoff. On Monday, EOLWD spokeswoman Alison Harris provided a written response.

“We do not have any emails, WARN notifications or other correspondence as pertains to your request,” she wrote.-

I hope this isn’t a precursor to the rest of the defense industry.

This has been going on for the last three years in the defense industry. Not much was made of it when many others were also losing their jobs, homes, and investments at the same time.

Yup. And something to think about -- these are likely to be good, well-paying technical jobs. These are the kinds of jobs that America needs, and they are going away.

And the people who held the jobs (in general) are somewhat older than the average bear. Young hotshots tend not to go into Defense. People who have ended their military career and now want to do technical work in the private sector -- those are the people who go into defense. A lot of these people will find it hard to get their next job. A fifty-year-old engineer? That's not what companies are looking for. Sorry.

This is just bad news all around.

Unless the DeathCare bill is repealed, many larger companies will be laying off. They are counting on the bill going away but they are prepared to do as they must. My company took nearly a billion dollar charge this year because of that bill. To lessen the damages layoffs will need to happen this year.

If these are line people I hope there is more firings. The factory people are union, Democrat and scum. I know someone who worked in a UTX factory. They tried to hide they were Repub, got found out, frozen out and lost their job in less than 2 months because the co workers made sure they got fired.

I hope all the union defense employees get fired. We do not need a defense industry with a muslim in the white hut. It is over. Thank idiots who watch Tv which has put the muslim in power and protects him.

America is broke. We do not need expensive weapons systems. Fire them all.

I hope all the factory union people lose there jobs because they are all Dems and voted for the muslim.

I am tired of paying for expensive weapons systems anyway when we have a muslim in the white hut destroying the military. People voted for this.

Oh I see worse.

The union twits want me to do all the work to make it a job a grade school kid could do and then they want to give me the heave ho.

The unions disgust me.
I am a self made man. Non degreed, scrapped hard for every inch of respect, and I am to turn it over to the button pushing ****head unions?

The end result is a union idiot that is over paid, who will lose his job after they cant figure out the stuff the hard working lad did to make his luxury job possible.

Meanwhile degreed idiot bean counters get rich making the process so convoluted, building empires that the entire business goes in the drink.

Sigh.... Work used to be a great joy, And we were #1!

Its all useless empire builders now. Six Sigma! Sig Heil!

Welcome to my world.

This used to be a satisfying job.
Now it seems like we have camps of people working against getting things done.

We had a Charles River Labs location in our town. They must have spent millions renovating the old Digital/Compaq/HP/Intel building, and ended up being open there less than 4 years.

A young man in our Parish Choir works for Raytheon. He hasn't mentioned being laid off.
