Military officials remain stumped about the mysterious projectile spotted in the sky off the Southern California coast, but aerospace experts said it appeared to be an errant missile launch.
Pentagon officials are looking into what they have called an "unexplained contrail" after a KCBS news helicopter shot video late Monday of a luminous point hurtling through the sky followed by a long vapor trail.
SNIP
The lack of explanation from the Pentagon makes Caceres believe it may have been a mistake -- perhaps a defense exercise launched by accident.

It was going nearly vertical and then curved to the NW slightly. I have seen many launches and it sure looked like one to me. The smoke looked like it was from a solid booster. The satellites will have the track. and can estimate point of impact as well.
Maybe two MP’s were play fighting and one of them got knocked into the trigger button.
They had better send out a memo to all the subs in the area to count their missiles to make sure they haven’t accidentally launched one.
Yeah, I just checked out the video! Oops! Spoke too soon!
Check out the Naval launch island west of Catalina (may be more like 50 miles from LA). Name starts with “N”, I think.
Wow. So THAT’S what that button on my keyboard does. Cool.
That was clearly a crop duster airplane spraying bugs. I’m surprised the Pentagon hasn’t come clean on this by now. (sarc)
Looks like Darks is still trying to launch himself into outer space.
I've seen several launches with my own eyes and it didn't look like one to me.
It's easy to say "we don't know," even when they do. Not saying, is not the same as not knowing.
If it's a missile, they know.
Yeah, there’s an app for that. LOL
As a pilot, I’m very familiar at what contrails look like. I saw the video of this on Fox News just tonight - I’m absolutely 100% certain that this wasn’t a contrail. This was a missle launch. Whether this was a scheduled or accidental military launch...
...or an offshore launch of air to ground anti aircraft missiles by Islamic Terrorists who intend to target aircraft arriving or departing west coast airports with such weapons, I’m not sure.
It was practice for the first Marmot Anti-Sat Weapon test.
Minus the Marmot of course.
(Beaver need not worry.)
LOL! I'm vastly amused that you're able to spell as if you're shouting through clenched teeth....
If Bush were president we’d be hearing about for the next 2 weeks.
I wonder if the Iranians were practising an EMP attack on the U.S.? Such an attack would create chaos.
“If it’s a missile, they know.”
Better believe they know. What they may now already know is that a foreign power can pop up 35 miles off of CA, launch a ballistic missile, and the first anyone knows of it is when it makes the morning news via traffic helicopter.
If it was at hover, and it popped it’s hatch, and there wasn’t a fast attack sub launching torpedoes at it BEFORE the missile left the tube, then we’re not sleeping as well as we used to for the trillions we put into defense these days.
