It's easy to say "we don't know," even when they do. Not saying, is not the same as not knowing.
If it's a missile, they know.

Better believe they know. What they may now already know is that a foreign power can pop up 35 miles off of CA, launch a ballistic missile, and the first anyone knows of it is when it makes the morning news via traffic helicopter.
If it was at hover, and it popped it’s hatch, and there wasn’t a fast attack sub launching torpedoes at it BEFORE the missile left the tube, then we’re not sleeping as well as we used to for the trillions we put into defense these days.
