L.A. ‘mystery missile’ may have been "errant" launch, experts say (Read that "accidental")

Military officials remain stumped about the mysterious projectile spotted in the sky off the Southern California coast, but aerospace experts said it appeared to be an errant missile launch.

Pentagon officials are looking into what they have called an "unexplained contrail" after a KCBS news helicopter shot video late Monday of a luminous point hurtling through the sky followed by a long vapor trail.

SNIP

The lack of explanation from the Pentagon makes Caceres believe it may have been a mistake -- perhaps a defense exercise launched by accident.

Why would either a harpoon or a tomawawk head up to the 30-45k feet this thing appears to be at?

“there’s no way in hell something that big can be launched by mistake.”

Ask the USS Saratoga and a certain Turkish destroyer about that theory. Mention Sea Sparrows,,,

USS Bedford recreation in honor of the recently departed James "Danno" MacArthur?

Commodore Schrepke: This is insane!
Captain Finlander: Now don't worry, Commodore. The Bedford'll never fire first. But if he fires one, I'll fire one.
Ensign Ralston: [launching the rocket] Fire One!

Those were likely short range missiles. Nothing like what we saw in this video, which appears to be an ICBM.

“Better believe they know.

Either they know, or you have to believe NORAD has no capability to detect a sub-launched missile 35 miles off our coast. The question, is why don’t they simply SAY, “we are sure it was not a missile launch”?

Interesting,,,I only wish our government was worthy of my trust.

I’m going to put my tin foil hat on and suggest this MAYBE is a dry run for an attempt on the president’s life when he returns to Washington.

The attempt MAY BE orchestrated by certain people in our own country but would be thwarted by the support aircraft traveling with the president.

What would be the response by the president because of the attempt on not only his live but his wife and children?

Because it would be launched close to our shores, would that be just cause for a call for Martial Law to be issued because of the mass hysteria and to investigate who was responsible.

This defeated president will go to any length to put this country under his Marxist thumb once and all.

Gotta’ go now, the nurse is coming around with my med’s

No, not that they look the same. You were saying accidental launches of serious weaponry are pretty much impossible. It wasn’t that a sea Sparrow looks like this missile,, but the point is,, in a drill, people can indeed make mistakes.

I recall it was also impossible for thermonuclear weapons to be accidently removed from a storage facility, loaded on a B-52, and flown across country without the crew even knowing they were there. The proceedures once made that unthinkable. But the discipline of SAC is a thing of the past. Ditto for the USN. But the B-52 nuke issue still happened,,,, an accidental launch is AT LEAST as likely as that IMO.

You may have a point there.

If there was a drill of some sort, and they weren’t firing ‘blanks’.... Dear God... If that was the case, heads should ROLL!! They could have ended the world!

Those last three are the space shuttle, launched east and with 5 flame sources: the two SRB boosters and the three shuttle engines.

But im kinda talking outta my butt here, im not a retired Sub captain or anything so i really have no idea.

And dear lord i want to believe that it’s impossible for a sub to accidently launch an ICBM,,, and you are right that it looked like an ICBM. At least to me too it looked like a BIG missile, not some anti-air weapon.

STS-119, evening launch, beautifully colored contrail, turns from orange to white as the shuttle gets high enough to be in the sunlight.

Doesn’t Vandenberg AFB launch missiles?

Tons of 'em, and tons of those are of the classified variety. We lived in the Santa Clarita Valley (roughly inland from Ventura), which is well south of Vandenburg......but every year or so we'd see the weirdest contrail/sky activity -- acknowledged Vandenburg launches.

The western sky and air currents can play some wicked tricks.

San Nicolas Island is the most remote of California's Channel Islands. It is part of Ventura County. The 14,562 acre (58.93 km² or 22.753 sq mi) island is currently controlled by the United States Navy and is used as a weapons testing and training facility, served by Naval Outlying Field San Nicolas Island. -- wikipedia
