Waiting for Janet Napolitano to come out and say, “Because the missile completely took us by surprise and we have no idea where it came from, shows that the system is working.”

The Type 094 Chinese Ballistic Submarines’ main weapon, the JL-2 would not be operational until 2010. According to GlobalSecurity.org.

The morons were supposed to launch and take out LA,....but prior to the election! They can’t even get that right! Look, make me President and when you wake up tomorrow morning the world will be a much safer place. That’s because Iran, Yemen, and North Korea will cease to exist. And I do mean cease.

I’m sure this was explained but exactly how did a TV helicopter just happen to be filming and just happened to be focused on 35 miles off shore at exactly the right moment to capture this rather brief in-flight video???????????

I thought it was worn teflon insulation in the fuel sensor.

I thought it was worn teflon insulation in the fuel sensor.

Doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is that you NOT say it was caused by a shoulder-fired missile.

No need for contrived explanations. More logical explanations abound, all related to the military.

IMO, it was a military test involving a probably sub-launched missile.

It seems clear that the military is keeping the exact nature of the test secret, but I would speculate that it involved the Global Missile Defense system in some way (there's an installation at Vandenberg), perhaps also some sort of ship-based missile defense, and likely some space-based assets were involved as well.

As an aside ... it could just be a new way of launching military missions into space. One wonders if the Sea Launch platform is still tied to the dock... Seems to me that such a ship would make a dandy platform for launching polar missions, and the location is such that it could leave port in Long Beach and reach the launch site in a matter of hours; and then come back after dark.

Imagine primitive Hiroshima-class devices detonating in downtown Manhattan or in DC, as well as a few other choice east and west coast cities, all within minutes of each other.

yeah.... I could, but it would somehow be Bush's fault and the new Republican congress would get blamed.... and of course it would be our fault that the core temperature of the nuke blast cause more global warming. The very first piece of legislation after a nuke strike from our democrats would be to ban the internal combustion engine, set up a fund for union members affected by the ash so they can run triathlons or move to Florida, raise taxes to pay for extending jobless benefits, cut defense spending and offer an apology to the country or religion (amish) that launched the missile.

A US test sounds plausible, but why would they do it so close to our own coast that its visible to land based civilians? Why not take it out to sea farther so no one is watching?
