Mystery Missile Launch Seen off Calif. Coast
CBS News ^ | 11/9/10 | CBS

(CBS) A mysterious missile launch off the southern California coast was caught by CBS affiliate KCBS's cameras Monday night, and officials are staying tight-lipped over the nature of the projectile.

CBS station KFMB put in calls to the Navy and Air Force Monday night about the striking launch off the coast of Los Angeles, which was easily visible from the coast, but the military has said nothing about the launch.

KFMB showed video of the apparent missile to former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, to get his thoughts.

Scroll down for KFMB video showing the launch.

"It's spectacular… It takes people's breath away," said Ellsworth, calling the projectile, "a big missile".

Magnificent images were captured by the KCBS news helicopter in L.A. around sunset Monday evening. The location of the missile was about 35 miles out to sea, west of L.A. and north of Catalina Island.

A Navy spokesperson told KFMB it wasn't their missile. He said there was no Navy activity reported in the area Monday evening.

On Friday night, Vandenberg Air Force Base, in California, launched a Delta II rocket, carrying an Italian satellite into orbit, but a sergeant at the base told KFMB there had been no launches since then.

Ellsworth urged American to wait for definitive answers to come from the military.

When asked, however, what he thought it might be, the former ambassador said it could possibly have been a missile test timed as a demonstration of American military might as President Obama tours Asia.

"It could be a test-firing of an intercontinental ballistic missile from a submarine … to demonstrate, mainly to Asia, that we can do that," speculated Ellsworth.

Ellsworth said such tests were carried out in the Atlantic to demonstrate America's power to the Soviets, when there was a Soviet Union, but he doesn't believe an ICBM has previously been tested by the U.S. over the Pacific.

Officially, at least, the projectile remains a mystery missile.

Hopefully it is an airplane contrail...but CBS and former U.S. Ambassador to NATO Robert Ellsworth, who is also a former Deputy Secretary of Defense, started this by calling it a “big missile”.

Has no one ever seen an airplane contrail at sunset?

I have. I have also seen the launch of an Atlas IV rocket from Cape Canaveral from a hotel balcony in Orlando, roughly 45 miles away. It looked very similar to the video they are showing on the news.

A jet contrail has a much smoother flight pattern than a rocket.

Catalina Island is their back yard....I’ve spent a lot of time in the area and they are present there a lot.

The military’s denial is not reassuring these days with Dear Reader over in Asia appologizing and bowing for the declining America.

I agree. Was just saying it is ridiculous to suggest NSA could be fooled by such a thing.

Maybe, pure speculation alert, that is what the carrier group is looking for?

The Pentagon response makes me think they are taking a page from “Men In Black”,

“Agent J: Man, we ain’t got time for this cover-up bullshit! In case you’ve forgotten, there’s an alien battle cruiser—

Agent K: There’s always an alien battle cruiser, or a Corellian death ray, or an intergalactic plague intended to wipe out life on this miserable little planet. The only way these people can get on with their happy lives is that they DO NOT KNOW ABOUT IT!

NORAD knows — Fox news needs to ask them.

Or the Pentagon could be showing off to Hussein as to who has control of the military?

Don’t kid yourself. Hussein has control of the military. The jihadi murders at Fort Hood demonstrated that unhappy fact.

speaking of the Pentagon, here is a snippet from a statement they just released. Subtle, but somewhat concerning change in language . . .

“At this point, until we know more information about what it may have been, there is not alarm,” Lapan said. “But that could change depending on what we find out.”

see post half way down the page for the full statement

WHERE in the hell did it GO?? Where did it hit/land/fall?

It is incredibly unsettling to have the Pentagon, for God’s sake, have NO ready explanation, cover story or theory at hand. This happened nearly 24 HOURS ago and they’re just NOW scrambling for cover?

WTH is going on here?

Has anyone entertained the notion that this might be a psy-ops caper by our own military intelligence apparatus?

Where does this 2 other missiles thing, thrown in at the end, come from?

Possibilities are:

1 Normal contrail

2 Secret US test/ show of force

3 Accidental launch

4 Chinese test/ show of force.

If we’re talking about a nuclear capable ballistic missile, there are some seriously disturbing possibilities.

So, why don't you just let us know that China is in one of their supersilent subs and fired a SLBM to let us know we better not devalue the dollar?

I mean, you are in with the government. Get clearance to tell us the troot!

Are you going to look be able to look into the RADAR-data available from the several Airport Surveillance RADARs in the area?

This would go aways to conform that the event actually took place about 35 miles from LA instead of being the product of an optical illusion some hundreds of miles further west ....

I found it interesting to see that (military?) helicopter in the foreground in some of the footage.
I saw that too, and throw in the fact that CBS just happened to have a camera pointed in that direction, and I suspect that someone in the military tipped off CBS to get the word out without officially getting the word out.

I read about a year or so ago, that since all of our personal computers are built in China now, that the Chinese have engineered “back-door” access into all of them.

It could be true in a few cases but, believe me, U.S. Intelligence spends considerable resources reverse-engineering BIOS code. I don't think this could realistically be done at the OS level (not without being quickly detected, anyway). And BTW, my motherboards were made in the U.S. and Taiwan.
