No AC Or Toilets, Crippled Carnival Ship Splendor Needs Tow
CBS4.com ^ | 11/8/10

One of Miami-based Carnival Cruise Lines' newest ships was dead in the water Monday night, more than 100 miles off the Mexican coast, as fire damage to the engine room left thousands of passengers without hot food, working toilets, or air conditioning for their cabins.

Everyone is safe, the cruise line says, but the cruise is over as soon as the Carnival Splendor can be towed to a Mexican port.

Fire broke out in the forward engine room around 6 a.m, Pacific time, the cruise line confirmed. Guests whose rooms were near the engine room were evacuated to the Lido Deck, an upper deck that opens onto the outdoors. The fire was reported out by 9 a.m., but a re-flash occurred, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

The damage is so extensive, the ship's key operating systems, including air conditioning, flushing toilets, hot meal preparations and telephones are not available.

Guests are being provided with bottled water and food items and are able to move around on the ship's upper open deck areas.

Several tow boats were heading toward the ship's location, which is about 150 miles south of San Diego. The US Coast Guard also sent ships to the area.

The 925-foot liner, carrying 3,300 passengers and more than 1,100 crew members will be towed to Ensenada, Mexico and passengers will be taken back to California, where the cruise line will help get them home.

"What a bunch of wussies, just get a thousand 5 gallon buckets and some toilet seats to sit on them, use some trash bags as liners.

Its what a lot of Alaskans use in the bush."

This isn't a crowd for the Alaskan bush. There would be a lot of old, dead wussies if cholera got started.

Doesn’t the Oasis have a Broadway show?

Haiti has a cholera outbreak now, and the cruise ships are still going to a private beach there. I would not sign up for that itinerary.

And the plan is to get them to Messico? How is that an improvement? It sounds like a typical Mexican vacation.

The Oasis has Hairspray. Very well done and not a bad choice. My kids enjoyed it and it wasn’t something sappy.

I share your concern and have an upcoming cruise with that routing but that area is an isolated and security controlled peninsula in the far north of the country well away from the outbreak areas. We will see...

I heard “Chicago” too. I am really looking forward to our Allure cruise. It will end on Christmas day and I think our family spending a week together will be a wonderful Christmas. Their ages then will be 21, 18, 15. Cruises are best for multi-generational families, something for everyone to do.

Ummmm, I don't think I'd be too thrilled to go to Ensenada.

What a choice....a cruise ship with no bathrooms or.....Mexico! UGH!

Well, my Sis & BIL are on a cruise, but they were headed to Panama. This must be in the Pacific.

The Coast Guard deployed a vessel to the scene yesterday, from Alameda California.

I also saw a 722 footer from the Coast Guard (the Bertholf maybe?) in the area on a marine traffic site, not clear if it was there for the incident or just traveling south.

Dear Dr. Scarpetta,

“...and a complimentary cruise in the future.”

LOL! Thanks, but no thanks.

Our own Carnival “adventure” was not nearly so miserable as this, but when our letters of complaint reached the home office, that's what we got back, too - coupons for a free cruise.

It was kind of hilarious for these people to think that we ever wanted to again board one of their stinking cattle pens on the water.

I'm sure it will be excellent. There is actually something for everyone, of every age. I love the entertainment, and especially, the relaxation. All you have to do is check the daily schedule, get dressed, show up, or just relax.

Dear Scarpetta,

It's a long story. Mostly a lot of little stuff that added up to feeling like we'd wasted a lot of money for a week in Purgatory.

If you'd like the boring details, I'm happy to share, but don't want to inflict them on an unsuspecting audience.
