Steven Hayes was sentenced to death by a Connecticut jury today for his role in the deadly 2007 home invasion that killed Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters.
The verdict came halfway through day four of deliberation for the jury that spend the whole weekend holed up in a New Haven courtroom discussing the fate of Hayes, 47.
Hayes is convicted of raping and choking Hawke-Petit to death, while accused accomplice Joshua Komisarjevsky is accused of sexually assaulting 11-year-old Michaela Petit. Michaela and her older sister Hayley, 17, died after they were tied to their beds and the house was set on fire.
The jury had struggled several times during deliberation to agree on a sentence for Hayes. On the first day of delibrations the jurors sent a note to Judge Jon Blue asking, "What does it mean to unanimously find the existence of a statutory mitigating factor?"

I have to defend the police.
The police treated it like a robbery/hostage situation based on the information they had. If those officers would have known that these animals were out to torture and kill and not just a couple of cat burglars stealing money, they would have went in right away no questions asked.
That is true and I think we really need to go back to the way it was done in the past. I don’t think the guys who murdered the Clutter family waited too long before they were hanged.
Check out the wikipedia article on the death penalty in New Hampshire. I agree, pre-1976 they might well have been executed. Problem is the new death penalty law does not allow the death penalty in this case, there are four special circumstances that allow the death penalty and this isn’t close to being one of them.
Mont Vernon is very similar to my town and one of the kids had ties to it, so the Masshole point is well taken. I’m afraid, though, that there are lots of kids like than in New Hampshire and in America. When I was growing up, kids were afraid of the cops and more afraid that the cops would bring you home to your father who would wail you even worse than they would. Nowadays there are too many boys who don’t know who their father is and even if they do he’s too busy with his current squeeze to pay any attention to them.
I remember right after the arrests, Steven Spader’s father tried to frame an alibi for him, claiming his son was in his father’s trailer all night along. Sheeesh.
He did not run away - sheesh. He had no idea what had happened to them and was seriously wounded in the head. He somehow crawled out of the basement outside and got his neighbor to call for help.
I like this Governor Dean, at least on this issue. He is absolutely right.
“He was never very Conservative anyway, was a Romney guy”
don’t you think he still deserves a chance for parole?????
I wonder if the father had a gun in the home for protection.
My wife knows where it is and what to do if im not home. And I will make sure my daughters know how to shoot a gun by their 14th or 15th birthday.
Every home should protection. I don’t care if you live in a small town, large town or in New York or Chicago. You have to protect your family.
Crucified, upside down on the beach at low tide
“I will never understand those who are not against the death penalty”.
I have always wondered if they have NOT been the victims of a horrible crime. I personally believe it is human nature to want an eye for an eye when someone rapes, tortures, and then murders a family. Just a thought.
Amen to that.
I didn’t know what happened to the Dad, I just heard he was there and survived. Prayers to him and his anguish.
Let the maggot die the same way he killed his victims.
Yep, and this decision has pushed back the Tom Foley presser until 2PM this afternoon.
Prayers for the father who, if not physically, emotionally, will endure unfathomable pain throughout his life. Pray that healing comes from the only one who has the power to heal such depths of pain.
It is amazing that most liberals are against the geath penalty but have no problem ripping a bay from the womb of it’s mother.
I wish I didn’t know the details I did. It’s actually a miracle he did not die too. And imagine knowing that your wife and daughter were both raped by the monsters before being burned to death. Worse, the daughters were burned alive.
I saw that bit only once and was actually startled to hear a Democrat say what he said but he said it ~ and that was the end of that. MSM keeps that one off ~ can't let too many folks know that Dr. Dean jumps the reservation on this issue.
Dennis Prager regularly brings up a story about a woman who called in and said that she had always been against the death penalty but was not FOR it. He asked her what changed and she said that her brother was murdered. Dennis basically said something like, “So when it is somebody ELSE’s love one, you are against it, but then when it’s YOUR loved one, suddenly you want death?” He cut right to the heart of the matter. Everyone should look at every horrific murder as if it were their child, spouse, parent, sibling, etc. And then assess the situation.
Ugh... gotta preview these things first I guess. My post should have read but was NOW for it (not “not”). The lady went from against it to for it.
You’d save even more by rounding up and executing the ACLU membership.
Of course... the lies of Satan corrupt and oppress people.
