The terrorist attacks on America on September 11, 2001, gave his administration a clear goal and him the resolve to find out who was responsible and "kick their ass," former President George W. Bush writes in his new book.
In "Decision Points," Bush describes his reaction when his then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice informed him of the crash of a third airplane into the Pentagon.
"I sat back in my seat and absorbed her words. My thoughts clarified: The first plane could have been an accident. The second was definitely an attack. The third was a declaration of war," the former president writes in his 481-page book, which goes on sale Tuesday.
"My blood was boiling. We were going to find out who did this, and kick their ass," Bush writes.
"In a single morning, the purpose of my presidency had grown clear: to protect our people and defend our freedom that had come under attack."

Whatever my disagreements with President Bush were during his 8 years as President (and there were a few ...) there was never a doubt in my mind that he did everything possible to prevent another attack and he took the battle directly to the enemies of America.
That's resolve, that's leadership.
Thank You President Bush.
“/s” at the end = ‘sarcasm off’ in FR-speak. The poster was imitating (in an extreme fashion, yes) the BDS that does unfortunately exist here.
That was my reaction too. The first plane attack should have been considered a declaration of war. Actually, any terroist attack should be.
Thanks, that says it better than I could have.
I agree, it should still be a smoking ruin. I don’t think anything good has ever come out of a’stan.
When I saw the headline, I thought this was pre-election advice from GWB to the electorate about how to respond to the events of the past 22 months: Porkulus, health deform, largest budget deficits in history, slowest recession recovery in modern history etc.
And I was thinking to myself: most voters followed his advice!
There will never be a perfect president.
President Bush served honorably, and when it came to defending our country, his fundamental responsibility as Commander-in-Chief, he did well. He did carry war to the enemy, and instead of death and destruction in the streets of Manhattan and D.C., for seven years the carnage was taken far from our shores.
Once the Kenyan usurper took over, it didn't take long until the murderous Mohammedans committed mass murder here again. Nidal Malik Hasan killed 14 Americans in Fort Hood, exactly one year and one day after the election of the Kenyan Clown.
The Kenyan Clown handled the incident disgracefully, and his frivolity of "shouting out" rather than addressing the enormity of the moment has only further encouraged more such behavior.
I get his point about this first plane. Could have been accidental. Second plane? Now it’s an attack. But the quote comes off like ok, it was a terrorist attack. But attack a gubmint building?? Well this means war. Not saying he meant it like that, but that’s how it came across.
Yes, I’m aware, thank you. I choose to ignore certain things! President Bush was about the most pro-life president we’re likely to see and I’m curious to know how he rationalizes spending and other disagreements conservatives have with him. Truth is, he was exactly who we elected in his actions, and I was concerned initially he would not be as strong in the war on terror as he proved to be. Hindsight among those who hold no power and thus no responsibilty is no burden, just more of the chattering class.
Im sorry but for a president to come out and say islam is what we are at war against would be the most irresponsible thing ever. Even if we are, it is ridiculous to say that is what he should have done. You are using too much passion in what you are saying, and I understand that but a person in his position to OPENLY declare war on a religion of whom there are adherents in this country and over 1 billion around the world would be suicide. I would like to think he believes that, but I would also want him to engage in that kind of war in other ways than openly blabbing about it simply to pander to some voters.
Agreed. I loved two facts about W:
1. You could tell that he loved this country and would do anything to protect it, and by extension the people.
2. There was no question that he was a deeply religious man and was not afraid to show it.
I'd also have to add one more: I loved his plain speaking when he was pissed off. (ie: Kick their ass. Want them dead or alive.
Yes he did. Where is the hate in discipline? Do you hate a child when they are wrong and you are angry?
I liked that he was plain spoken. Made him seem more human than a lot of politicians.
I don't often write "me, too" responses, but I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiments. Well said.
“The Lord watched over us while he and Cheney continued to keep us safe despite the onslaught from the America hating left.”
Amen
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition.
Thank you. And DISCIPLine is the PERFECT word:) It is with us for a reason. He was a strict teacher, not a mean one. That job was left for Satan.
Oh how I wish we still has a President with a full set of balls!!!
With God as my witness, I miss that man’s leadership.
