The White House is scrambling to strike a last-minute deal with congressional Republicans to save its new nuclear arms treaty with Russia from a lingering death.
Obama administration officials are trying to win the support of the GOP point man, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, to schedule a ratification vote in the upcoming lame-duck session rather than next year, when Republicans will hold six more Senate seats.
The treaty, which also awaits ratification in Russia, would lower each country's maximum number of long-range active nuclear warheads and set procedures for them to inspect each other's strategic nuclear bases.
...President Obama declared Thursday that one of his top priorities is approval of the treaty, which is known as New START and is perhaps his most tangible foreign policy achievement. But some senior Republicans, such as Sen. Richard G. Lugar of Indiana, predict there won't be time to take up the treaty this year.

Kyle is a fool if he goes along with this. Why take a deal now, when you will be in a much better position to negotiate in a couple months?

The GOP better become the party of “No, we will NOT let you and your commie comrades weaken our nuclear deterrent.”
Don’t take up the treaty until after 2012, and then take it up to throw away.
The One is picking the easy stuff that almost nobody can say No to. He’ll come back later with the harder stuff, like a drug dealer. The Repubs need to be reminded that in his election night speech, Obama basically said he’s pushing his agenda ahead regardless of the will of people. He’s in legacy-salvage mode.
If the usurper is pushing it, it can’t be any good for America. It is very clear that our bad joke of a “president” would never do anything that might benefit the United States.
Kyl should say drop your lawsuit against Arizona and then we’ll talk.

IN January we will have 47 on our side, and 6-8 Dems (from red states) who will have to toe the GOP line. That’s where the majority will be.
START was written when it was US vs USSR. It is now a new game, with multiple potential opponents, particularly including China. START needs to sunset. The Russians don’t have the funds to start a nuclear arms race anyway.
IIRC, Obama's goal is total nuclear disarmament. Of course, then only enemies would have nuclear weapons.
