(Letter to Editor)
The Michigan State Police have issued a new update on its website that clarifies a lot of questions about firearms. A Michigan resident may carry a loaded, holstered firearm in any public venue.
A concealed pistol license holder may carry a loaded holstered firearm in all of the so-called gun-free zones. They may openly carry in a bar, church, liquor store, movie theater, school or anywhere else not prohibited by federal law, such as post offices and courtrooms.
It is legal to carry openly to the voting booth and also in non-secured areas of police stations and airports. Citizens are not bound by anything in Michigan law to present identification to a police officer unless it is a moving violation in a motor vehicle. Citizens do not have to talk to police, and unless they are being detained for criminal suspicion, they may simply walk away. Each situation is different, but it is important that people know their legal rights.
Private business owners can carrying guns in their establishments, and you can decide whether or not to patronize businesses that restrict your right to self-defense.
Remember all major shootings have been in gun-free zones. The bad guys ignore the signs, so if you leave your gun in the car, your options have diminished greatly. Be safe.
George Kunkle

This needs to be the law in all 50 states not just Michigan.
Someone needs to send this to the state Po-Lice and see what they say about it before it gets published any farther. Sounds like bullsh*t to me especially coming from the Blue North.
I agree wholeheartedly. When it comes to gun law, one should ALWAYS go to the source. I wouldn’t put it past a lib to put out disinformation to see how many “dumb hicks” they can get arrested, and in the process lose their right to gun ownership altogether.

I agree and that was the purpose of my question “Cannot find this on Mich State Police Website can you?”
I know it did print in the paper because My father sent the info to me. I also find it very odd that they (Macomb Daily) printed it and two that I cannot find it on the Mich State Police web site.
I am looking to see if any of our Freeper’s know anymore on this.
It is the law in all 50 States. “The right to keep and bear arms...” The problem is not legal authority to do so. A controlling legal authority does exist. The problem is forcing the basturds to let us exercise. Even in the ultra conservative State of Oklahoma you can’t open carry. But that is constitutionally wrong. I don’t care a fig what judges say. I can read the 2nd Amendment. It says what it says.
I agree with what you are saying, getting there is the problem. If one starts strolling around and gets charged with a felony, what has been accomplished?
This sounds like misinformation put out to create an incident and get someone in trouble. Carrying in post offices and courtrooms is prohibited by Federal law. I’m not sure about schools but it’s also a no-no where I live.
I know. We need a trans-formative re-evaluation of case law. Errr. Throw out case law and return to Blackstone and Natural Law.
This has a fishy, too-good-to-be-true smell to it. The part about carrying in all prohibited zones????
Yes it did publish this both on the web and as I understand in print also.
If you re-read it you will note the writer does say except where Federal Law IE Post Office and Courtrooms off limits.
But this is not my point, My point is supposedly the Mi State Police had this on their web site and I can find no such thing and furthermore why would the paper print this even if it is an opinion column when the fact could be simply checked.
“A concealed pistol license holder may carry a loaded holstered firearm in all of the so-called gun-free zones. They may openly carry in a bar, church, liquor store, movie theater, school or anywhere else not prohibited by federal law, such as post offices and courtrooms.”
I see now, the wording was a little odd in the last sentence.
Here in Massachusetts, we can only dream about police chiefs putting out stuff like this.
If you would like to be added or dropped from the Michigan ping list, please freepmail me.
I’m not so sure this article is accurate
I agree! I live in the writer's area and found that he has a website dealing with custom ammo..........So I sent him an email at his listed address on his site asking where he found that "Updated" info......
I have a sneaking suspicion that somebody may have submitted that letter using his name..............if I'm wrong and it was indeed George Kunkle then the question that needs to be asked is why he published such BS information .......
I'm a CPL holder in Michigan as are several of my friends and none of us have heard of any such changes.
