While the Republican gains in the House and Senate are grabbing the most headlines, the most significant results on Tuesday came in state legislatures where Republicans wiped the floor with Democrats.
Republicans picked up 680 seats in state legislatures, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures -- the most in the modern era. To put that number in perspective: In the 1994 GOP wave, Republicans picked up 472 seats. The previous record was in the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Democrats picked up 628 seats.
The GOP gained majorities in at least 14 state house chambers. They now have unified control -- meaning both chambers -- of 26 state legislatures.
That control is a particularly bad sign for Democrats as they go into the redistricting process. If the GOP is effective in gerrymandering districts in many of these states, it could eventually lead to the GOP actually expanding its majority in 2012.

Maybe. I didn't see it.
Gallup's +15 generic ballot was off by almost 50% (it was +9) which is why people got over exuberant and hence why the biggest victory since 1946 feels like a let down to some.
Of the 15 competitive seats, GOP went 11 of 15. The 11 are the 6 pickups plus open seat holds in OH,NH,MO,FL,& KY. Dems held NV, DE, CT, and WV.
If Liberals want to continue in their usual state of denial, hysteria and self-induced myopia, thats fine.
They can take the voting results, manipulate them, make excuses, or slice and dice them any MoFo way they want it comes out the same. THEY are going in a direction VERY FEW Americans want to follow-and Americans have been CLEAR on this.
NOW-they want to work with Conservatives. Really????
Work-implies give and take.
Where was THAT sentiment when Liberals used Healthcare as a cudgel on American taxpayers?
Where was THAT sentiment when O went around the world bent double in shameful and unqualified penitence to people and governments who openly avow their hostility for the US?
Where was THAT sentiment while O gratuitously eviscerated the social equilibrium of this country?
Where was THAT sentiment when O and his creatures blamed Conservative leaders (past and present) for ALL our economic ills?
Where was THAT sentiment when O characterized legitimate opposition to his administration as enemies
please
!
Liberals are in NO position to take and WE are under NO obligation to give.
Something overlooked, these state legislature pickups will also provide the “minor league” training camp for future National candidates. It will give the GOP much greater depth in the future in being able to field solid candidates.
Ras seemed closer.
Yes, but the Dim-Dems spent most of their efforts firewall protecting Reid, Bennet and attacking O'Donnell to save a few Dim Senate seats, that their soft underbellies were left under protected.
11 of 15, that’s pretty good
I'd like to see Shiela Jackson Lee redistricted out of her seat in 2012.
Ohio's Apportionment Board, which redraws US House districts, is made up of the Governor, Secretary of State, Auditor, and a member of from each political party. Thanks to the results Tuesday, we now enjoy a 4-1 majority on the Board. :)
Betty Sutton, in OH-13, was the lone Ohio Democrat to survive a competitive race this year. She should enjoy her re-election, because he district will be gone by the next election.
The tsunami was fully felt in the states, and it all benefits the GOP.
“And in North Carolina — probably the state most gerrymandered to benefit Democrats — Republicans hold both chambers of the state legislature and the Democratic governor does not have veto power over redistricting proposals.”
this is huge...first time in 112 years!
The 17th amendment is a contradiction to the framers intent and has done nothing it promised.
I’d rather not have rat supermajorities in the senate forever.
so many small marxist/secular socialist NE states, Senate is more difficult. Also, Senate campaigns tend to be less grassroots and more elitist.
They cannot be bothered to report on the doings of 535 members of congress (except the occasional smear against a Republican) let alone 50 state legislatures?
They will go back to fixating on the Administration like it's the only game in town.
“Wow, they must have made gains in all 57 states.”
Obama....is that you?.....
“Too bad gerrymandering/packing doesnt help the Senate races.”
It actually helps our chances for Senate in another way. More GOP state legislatures means more successful GOP governors (since they’ll need votes to pass their agendas) who could then run for Senate on their record.
GOP Picks Up 680 State Legislature Seats
bttt
I’d like to see Shiela Jackson Lee redistricted out of her seat in 2012.
It would be nice but most likely won’t happen as Texas is still one of nine states that have to get approval of their redistricting from the Feds, Voting Rights Act of 1965 is still in play here thus the set aside districts. The state has asked to be released from the requirement but to no avail.
The largest newspapers in New Jersey fired all of their seasoned Statehouse writers and editors in the last 2 years. They now have green behind the ears 20-somethings going around trying to cover the Statehouse politics.
The resulting reporting has gotten so bad that the Republicans, environmentalist lobbyists, education lobbyists and politically powerful people in general openly refuse to communicate with the state’s largest newspapers since the reporters don’t know the most basic knowledge of the bills, laws, rules, judgments etc they are supposedly covering.
It has been comically bad, however it has created an explosion of online news sources and propaganda and agitation outlets, returning to the roots of the news media in this state.
>> In a sense, this is even better news than the House gains.
The elected should all be managed by the constituency until they prove themselves worthy of the responsibility.
