Washington (CNN) -- His party got its clock cleaned in Tuesday's midterm elections, but President Barack Obama still remains competitive in some hypothetical 2012 presidential election matchups, especially against Sarah Palin, a new poll shows.
A CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey released Thursday also indicates that at the unofficial start of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, the field of possible contenders appears wide open with no front-runner.
Twenty-one percent of Republicans say they would most likely support 2008 GOP White House candidate and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee for their party's 2012 presidential nomination, according to the poll.
The number is 20 percent for another 2008 Republican presidential hopeful, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
Fourteen percent say they support Palin, the former Alaska governor and 2008 GOP vice presidential nominee, with 12 percent backing former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia.
The remaining candidates, whose names were all in single digits, are led by Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who also ran for the GOP presidential nomination the last time around, followed by Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, Rep. Mike Pence of Indiana, and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania.
The poll's release comes as Santorum visits New Hampshire to give a speech about the midterm election results and the future of the Republican party. No one has yet to announce a bid for the GOP nomination.
In a possible general election showdown, Obama leads Palin 52-44 percent among all registered voters.

Rubio addressed the Arizona law in this article.
Yeah but Romney would privatize Chrysler to AMC. His dad ran AMC. Mitt would bring back his dad’s Rambler. A Rambler hybrid.
Not such a bad deal if you ask me. (s)
“I am a bit shocked CNN put this out at all.”
I’m NOT. ORC is Clinton’s buddy Gonads Vupta, or something like that, so I’d say this is a Clinton fishing expedition to determine which candidate they want to assign to the Repubs in 2012 like they assigned McPain to the Repubs in 2008.
LOL!!! If he can bring back the Pacer he’s got my vote!
I was in the MA GOP when Romney was elected and I’m telling you, no! You don’t want that!
"I will not seek, and I will not accept the nomination of my party for another term as your president."
With what Kasich was up against, just barely making it is impressive. People think that with the Ohio economy being in the shape it’s in and the anti-Democrat mood in the country and Ohio in particular, that Kasich should’ve won easily, but that’s not the case. While he certainly isn’t very popular, Strickland isn’t that unpopular, either. He had tons of money to sling mud at Kasich and it almost worked. I’m not saying Kasich should be the guy in 2012, but don’t eliminate him on the basis of barely winning his election.
As Rush says, the media will always tell us who they’re most afraid of. At the beginning of Obama’s term we were told Republicans would be out in the wilderness for decades. Out of all the “prominent” names they mentioned only Palin was willing to put herself out there. She campaigned, endorsed, and was available for interviews. Where were any of the other big names? Well, okay, Romney DID campaign for Lincoln Chaffe. Last presidential election we let the media and establishment Republicans define us. If we do it again we deserve the “shellacking” we’ll get.

As soon as the left demonizes a candidate, we move on to the next candidate in the vain hope that the radical media and elites will find that candidate acceptable.
When we find the milktoast candidate that is acceptable to the rabid commentators at CNBC, they will still turn on him or her in a general election.
Until we quit accepting the Left’s premise that Conservatives are all a bunch of stupid extremist, we are going to continue getting the McLames/ and Doles at the top of our ticket.
Remember, the left said that Reagan was a stupid “B” movie actor that lacked gravitas, and wanted to start WWIII. I seem to recall that he did pretty well in a couple of elections.
“LOL!!! If he can bring back the Pacer hes got my vote!”
AMC Pacer Hybrid. AMC/Chrysler could bring back all their hits. A retro Javelin. A retro Rambler Hybrid.
Christie has already said he has no intentions of being a Vice-President.
Perhaps i'm too cynical, but maybe they put this out in order to follow it up it over the course of the next year with articles along the lines of "what Obama needs to do to win back voters" and then later if his numbers start to tick upward a bit "resurrection: remember how everyone was saying Obama was all but dead politically?" and then that way they can label him "the comeback kid!" à la Bill Clinton.
Rubio and McCollum initially came out against the AZ law. They quickly revised their comments. Too late for McCollum. Rubio blocked AZ like laws when he was the FL House Leader. He is a decent guy but I would take West over him.
As for TARP, she was running on a ticket where the candidate on the top of the ticket supported it, so she couldn't exactly come out against it. I also believe she later said it was a mistake.
“Romney/Rubio.”
This is a Republican candidate.
Big Government Liberal Democrats like Romney who lie and call themselves Republicans need not apply.
Christie/Rubio 2020
Christie/Rubio 2020
Utter crap, especially in its breakdown.
According to this poll, not only is Obama ahead/likely to ultimately win against almost anybody, but scarcely a GOP name has an favorability rating over 36%.
Even after Tuesday, CNN manages to push a poll showing Obama is likely to win re-election and America hates every Republican.
Utter, complete bunk.
If you don’t think Gov. Palin get it read and weep because she does.
