CONCORD – Republicans are on their way to controlling nearly 300 seats in New Hampshire's House of Representatives, according to preliminary vote counts. The latest tally shows 296 seats firmly in Republican hands, with three seats yet to be decided. GOP sources say two of those will likely go their way and leave Democrats with 102 seats.

In the Senate, the final split is 19-5, according to figures at the Secretary of State's office. That represents a pickup of nine seats for the Republicans, who were the minority in a 14-10 Senate for the past four years.

While I voted straight republican, I would much have preferred to do the libertarian line, but knew we had to take out the trash. So, the article spreads good news.

That said, I don’t much care about the party, I care about their actions.

So, as far as I’m concerned, it’s wait and see for NH.

400 members? What the heck? I think NH might be a bit bigger than my corrupt state (NJ) but we only have 40 in the Senate and 80 in General Assembly.

Maybe they all volunteer and dont received health or pension benefits?

Committees of twenty
debate often and plenty

Committees of ten
act now and then

But most jobs are done
by committees of one...

"On average, each legislator represents about 3,300 residents. If the same level of representation were present in the U.S. Congress, that body would have approximately 99,000 members, according to current population estimates."

NH is the most represented state in the nation. Each legislator only represents around 300 or so constituents. And they only get paid around $100 or so a year for doing it.

Both houses in Bama and NC.

Both houses in NH, both in Maine.

Ohio, PA, MI lower houses (already had Senates).

Both chambers in WI and MN.

Iowa House (not Senate)

Montana Senate taken back, already had house.

NY and Alaska Senates in doubt.

Correct. We don't believe in paying them - that only encourages them to hang around.

And if you need them, you call them at home.

We do pay Senators, and they get offices in Concord on our dime - but their staff budgets are minimal.

http://www.bellinghamherald.com/2010/11/03/1702589/republicans-won-more-than-600.html

“Republicans won more than 600 state legislative races, taking control of at least 18 chambers across the country and positioning themselves for years of electoral advantage through control of redistricting.
The GOP now holds more state legislative seats than it has since 1928, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.”

I’m missing 1 or 2 if it’s 18 chambers. Most total seats since the great depression.

It remains to be seen if these new guys have any respect for liberty. The Dems committed suicide when they came in in 2006 by unleashing a tidal wave of environmental and other regulations (although, because we have no income or sales tax, enforcement is weak).

If the new GOP majorities gut the Department of Environmental "Services" and make some other progress against intrusive regulations, they may get to stick around.

I’m surprised NH has that many seats in such a relatively small state. The entire lower house in CA (the State Assembly) only has 80 seats.

How large an area does one NH House member represent?
