While his party basked in the afterglow of a historic House victory, Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) announced he would resign as House Republican Conference Chairman, and Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling threw his hat in the ring.
Hensarling, who has led the conservative Republican Study Committee, quickly won the endorsement of incoming Eric Cantor (R-Va.), the likely incoming majority leader. The Cantor backing gives Hensarling a huge boost for the leadership job, which is seen as a stepping stone to higher slots in the GOP hierarchy.
Today, I was saddened to learn that my dear friend Mike Pence has chosen not to stand for House Republican Conference Chairman for the 112th Congress, Hensarling said in a news release. While I do not claim to be able to fill Mike Pences shoes, I have the commitment and passion to build upon his work. To that end, I announce my candidacy to be the next Chairman of the House Republican Conference.
POLITICO reported last week that Pence was planning to step down and that he planned to tell his colleagues that he was looking at serving beyond the House.
As we consider new opportunities to serve Indiana and our nation in the years ahead, I have come to realize that it may not be possible to complete an entire term as Conference Chairman, Pence said in a letter to colleagues. As such, I think it would be more appropriate for me to step aside now, especially since there are other talented men and women in our Conference who could do the job just as well or better.
Hensarling is positioning himself as having seen first-hand what happens when a party loses its way and ceases to live what it espouses.
I fought it then and am committed to ensuring it never happens again, Hensarling said. The fifth-term Republican is running on unity, empowerment and service.
While Hensarling is already a favorite for conference chair, the short list of other potential candidates include Jason Chaffetz of Utah, Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington state, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee and Michele Bachmann of Minnesota.

Perhaps Palin-Pence? That would be cool.....the campaign can be called “two p’s in a pod”.....ok maybe that would be lame. :)
Good, I was hoping he would consider running in 2012
Pence/Christie? Pence/Palin? Palin/Pence? Pence/Bachmann is my guess!
Maybe?
I’m thinking Pence will emerge as the front-runner for the nomination. Look where the GOP’s biggest wins were - the Great Lakes region. Sorry to say, but Palin’s hopes took a big hit last nite. Angle, O’Donnell and Miller were her biggest proxies aside from Nikki Haley.
i dunno why ppl like pence to be honest. He’s rather boring
Why would keeping his leadership position inhibit him for “setting the table for bigger things”?

I know Pence has said he’s interested in running in Indiana, but I’d love to see him run for Pres in 2012. Pence/Christie, Pence/Rubio, Pence/Brewer...
What a great night .. and thank you, Lord !!
Personally I’ve never really believed Palin would run. I do believe she has every intention of being part of what drives the next GOP nominee.
That woman (and a few others) has been more effective than any elected official we’ve seen in a long while.
“Boring” may be a draw in 2012. We need to put grown-ups back in charge.
I don’t think Marco’s parents were Citizens when he was born. Anybody know?
Well, realistically, the time constraints of a leadership position, if, for example, he’s planning a presidential run in 2012 or for governor.
The 2012 election cycle BEGINS TODAY!
I am guessing he will run for Governor. Daniels term is up in 2012.
Running for Governor of IN?
Isn’t it interesting that the mexican drug and illegal alien routes into this country along the Az. and Texas borders have remained firmly in democrat control!
Me thinks there could be some very fruitful investigations concerning this in the future. How much mexican drug money went into the dem coffers?
I like Marco and he is legally qualified to be V. Pres. or POTUS but I doubt he is electable on a National level.
