Texas Democrats were bracing for a bloodbath in the Texas House, where Republicans could pick up 20 or more seats and were threatening incumbents who weren't considered vulnerable before Tuesday night.
Even the leader of the House Democrats, Rep. Jim Dunnam of Waco, was trailing in a race that was too close to call.
"It's shaping up to be an awful night," said Democratic consultant Jeff Crosby. "Clearly independent voters swung heavily to the Republicans tonight, leaving Democrats with only their base to depend on. In that environment, they were just easy pickins."
More than 20 Democratic incumbents were trailing Tuesday night with returns still rolling in. The House seats mirrored statewide trends favoring Republicans, but the number of seats that could swing to the GOP was among the most dramatic results of the night.
Republicans have a majority in the House now but barely. The 150-member chamber is split 75-73 with two vacancies. The GOP was clearly going to strengthen their majority during Tuesday's elections, but no credible analyst predicted the tsunami that appeared to be engulfing Democrats in the state House.

I'll be happy to see him and Patrick Rose gone. I hope that these early poll results hold: it could mean the GOP has 100 seats in a 150-seat House.
Yes indeed!
Now we can move those pro gun bills that died without a floor vote last time.
Crush the Dems, drive them out before us, and hear the lamentations of their women.
Those bills (and a lot of other bills) died because the Democrats ran out the clock fighting a bill that would require a picture ID to vote.
I expect that will be one of the first bills to be passed in January.
This is good news for Texas.
The house is where the work gets done, and as the article says, we had a thin majority.
Let the donkeys have California. Texas is the state to be a conservative model and stronghold.
Well said.
This whole night has been one big blood bath.....and it was just what we needed.....
gosh...I feel better already....I know that where ever Nazi Polesi is she is cringing!
Excellent news for redistricting next year.
Now if we can just profile as Californians try to move to Texas and only let the conservative ones in, all will be right.
It’s a darn shame.
Ca is a beautiful place, and the majority of folks were conservative when I lived there, but the big liberal cities foul it up for the majority.
Excellent news!
This makes the likelihood that we’ll see an Arizona-style anti-illegal immigration bill, a virtual certainty. And, now that Perry has come out in support of Arizona’s position, it’s likely he’ll sign it.
Tea for Texas!
Good point, because they ARE infiltrating the state.
They are mucking up Az too.
We finally shook Chet Edwards, too.
I just came from the Bill Zedler campaign party. Bill was up against Chris Turner who had received funds from ACORN, unions and out of state sources. Bill was up over 2100 votes, returning that state representative district back to Republican.
I hope that we can also get photo id for voting. Also I hope we can now emulate Arizona’s immigration laws and Oklahoma’s laws like English as the offical language.
Plus that pretender Chet Edwards is GONE!
I know - thank God - Edwards is out!
I am in a hotel in SA tonight and I am praying that Quico Canseco can pull off the upset over Ciro Rodriguez!
It would have been MUCH better if we could have also fired Eddie Bernice Johnson and Sheila Jackson Lee, but I will be happy with what we can get!!!!
I agree!! Also see my post #18.
I expect you are right.
