Fibre's bad for you. Fat's healthy. And five-a-day is a gimmick to make fruit and veg firms rich. Or so claims a remarkable new book
'We think we know what to eat: less red meat and more fibre, less saturated fat and more fruit and veg, right? Wrong, according to a controversial new book by obesity researcher and nutritionist Zoe Harcombe.
In The Obesity Epidemic: What Caused It? How Can We Stop It? Harcombe charts her meticulous journey of research into studies that underpin dietary advice and her myth-busting conclusions are startling.'

Ok, I get plenty of D, but I may be short on C.
Thank You for a very informative response. That helps a great deal. I have a liver function every 4 months due to a med I’m on. It turns out really good everytime so that’s not a problem. I would really like to get my system back to normal.
What are you the grand Oracle of knowledge?
Incidentally, “fat” and “lazy” are very subjective terms. As the Oracle of all knowledge, I assume that you also are the one who determines who is fat and lazy.
How a person’s clothes fit is a much better measurement for whether weight is good than the scale. Muscle weighs more than fat so a person can actually weigh more and be more fit. Of course, we are talking about reason here. I have found that when the clothes start getting tight, it’s time to do some work.
I agree. Fit is the best way to go. But I do need vitamin C. I crave oranges, note to self, get some oranges or vit.C.
Not really. But I know better than to go around saying that fat lazy smokers outlive trim fit non-smokers.
But I did NOT say that. You read into what I posted and assumed that. Even after I tried to clarify that I believe there is much anecdotal evidence to support what Scotsman said about lots of unhealthy people living very long (it’s genes, baby, genes... my anatomy prof, my bio prof and many have always said - genes, genes, genes). So, like I said, you think you are some sort of Oracle that knows and apparently can read minds too.
I didn't say you said that. You read something into my post that is not there. Do you think you are some sort of Oracle that knows and apparently can read what is not written?
This is what you said:
“You agree with him that fat, lazy smokers outlive trim, fit non-smokers?”
Then I clarified that I did not say that. But you won’t get off the groove in the record.
So, I’m done with you. You are a one-track pony.
You missed the part where you asked if I was some kind of Oracle and I replied that I was not an Oracle but knew enough to not say that fat lazy smokers were more healthy than slim fit non-smokers.
Caffeine, sugar, fat and chocolate for me are the four major food groups :-)
I just bought two of them, one for Hubby and me, and one as a gift for his boss.
Boss is going to love it because it suits his attitude. If he ever collapses at work, he says he wants them to refrain from calling the paramedics until they're sure he's stone cold. No lingering illnesses for this guy.
Coffee, scotch, french fries, and chocolate?
One tiny point: If you’re not adding salt to your food, consider adding an Iodine supplement to your vitamins.
You’re right. Stress is the key, a very important factor. That’s why not everyone fits neatly into the studies, and the “my fat, smoking, drinking gran was healthy in her 90’s” stories abound.
I’ve never had Scotch but could live for years on coffee, fries and chocolate ;-)
When I was in the hospital, they literally gave me nothing but carbs. I refused to eat because I’m a Type II diabetic, diet controlled to well into the normal range (80-90 FBS).
I refused to eat and asked the nurses to change my diet. Instead (well into my second day) they sent a dietitian to my room to scold me. She finally asked me what I would eat, and I told her eggs, fresh fruit, plain meat, fresh veggies, butter, cream, coffee. They sent me two boiled eggs and an apple for every meal until I left. They have little to no healthful food in hospitals, and they torture people who don’t follow the “poison pyramid.”
One daughter was overweight (about 50#) and suffered from wild mood swings. She had also been a sugar addict since she was a teenager.
A few years ago she cut out all sugar or sweets, all refined grains, and lives on vegetables, full fat milk products including tons of cheese, butter, half and half etc, coconut and coconut milk, nuts and seeds, some legumes and now adding a tiny bit of fruit occasionally or a little bit of rice or other whole grains, but smaller amounts.
She lost 50#, looks and feels great, and mood swings calmed way, way down. Sort of a vegetarian Atkins?
no fruit?
I am with you on everything else besides that
I felt 100% better when I started going back to my college age diet- 100% whole milk, fruit -especially bananas (a lot of them) and oatmeal and all the meat and cheeses and eggs I feel like
When I am hungry I snack on dried beef or dried ham slices that I keep in the fridge
I lost a lot of stomach fat and feel good
