I had read somewhere - can’t remember the source - that the notion of the National Socialists of Germany being “right wing” was a smear invented by the International Socialists of the era from the Soviet Union.

The smear stuck and now pervades arguments about the difference between “the right” and “the left.”’ I remember my high school social studies teacher back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth telling us how the Nazis were conservative and right-wing and the Communists were progressive and left-wing.

I like Jonah Goldberg’s continuum of political ideology based on the amount and application of government power. Seen that way, the Nazis and the Communists are within kissing distance.
