The Rev. Willie Wilson, a nationally prominent black pastor, announced his backing of Rep. Mark Kirk in the Illinois Senate race Monday, bucking his long tradition of supporting Democrats and splitting his endorsements at the top of the state ballot.

Wilson’s blessing is meant to signal to black voters that the Republican candidate is an acceptable option in one of the nastiest and closest Senate contests in the country.

“It’s about the man, not the party,” said Wilson, a pastor at Union Temple Baptist Church in Washington.

The endorsement comes on the heels of a new Chicago Tribune/WGN-TV poll showing Kirk maintaining a small 3-percentage-point lead over Democrat Alexi Giannoulias, powered by the Republican's strength among independents. That survey also showed Chicago as the area in the state that had the greatest number of undecided voters, at 21 percent.

Flanked by dozens of Westside black ministers at a Baptist Church in Maywood, Ill., on Monday morning, Wilson, who also endorsed Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn for reelection, dubbed Kirk “a proven leader with a record of independence.”

“Today’s endorsements highlight the support Kirk is receiving in traditionally Democratic areas due to his record as a fiscally responsible consensus builder.

Anyone with the magic “R” behind his/her name is just hunky dory with some. I am not a Republican, I am an American Conservative and that’s why I will be voting for the most conservative person running and it sure as hell is not Mark Kirk.

Someone has already said it, Giannoulias is on his way to jail, then our new Governor can appoint a Conservative to the seat.
