U.S. NO LONGER SEEN AS AMONG “LEAST CORRUPT” NATIONS
Sky Valley Chronicle ^ | October 26, 2010 | unknown

The United States is no longer in the Top 20 of the world’s “least corrupt nations,”according to Transparency International a Berlin based group that calls itself “the global civil society organization leading the fight against corruption.”

The United States fell to 22nd on the list from 19th last year, with its score on TI’s list dropping to 7.1 from 7.5 in the 178-nation index due mainly to financial scandals and the influence of money in U.S. politics.

The score is based on independent surveys on corruption. The U.S.’s score of 7.1 this year was the lowest score awarded to the United States in the index's 15-year history and also the first time it had fallen out of the top 20.

This was the lowest score awarded to the United States in the index's 15-year history and also the first time it had fallen out of the top 20.

Somalia was judged the most corrupt country in the world followed by Myanmar and Afghanistan at joint second-worst and then by Iraq.

Heading up the index as “least corrupt” -- in which a score of 10 indicates a country with the highest standards, and 0 as highly corrupt -- were Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore all with a 9.3 score. They were also at the top of the table last year.

The group highlighted the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Madagascar, Niger and the United States as nations where perceptions of corruption had deteriorated.

Might it be that Obama and his administration’s motto (”everybody get some”) has contributed to this?

Having lived most of my life in the Chicago area, I'm surprised we are not on the list of Most Corrupt nations. Obama has taken us full third world.

The first thing we could do to improve our image in the future is to start electing presidents born in America again.

I say we are a fascist nation where government exists to help friends in business and businessmen thrive by helping their friends in government.

Other folks say we are a banana republic.

I just want my country back.

More reason for term limits for all politicians and for consumers to not buy from crony capitalists companies like GE.

The bigger the government, the more money it has and the more things it does or purports to do, the great the amount of corruption. If you want less corruption in government in the United States, reduce the size and scope of government and its supply of money.

Another annual report dropped us from economically free to partially free. I pray that the Republicans will be able to stall Obama for two years and then replace him and add enough senators to prevent a filibuster.

“Obama has taken us full third world.”

Yep. He brought the Chicago Way to the Beltway. We’re all the losers for it. For a man who claims to be so preoccupied with world opinion, this is an ironic turn of events.

The group highlighted the Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Madagascar, Niger and the United States as nations where perceptions of corruption had deteriorated.

Our reputation is catching up with reality.

What I find amazing about the list is certainly not our slide (though depending on who compiles it, the Supreme Court decision saying companies could donate might have had an impact, which is BS).

The amazing thing is that Singapore, which is basically a one party state ruled by one family is so damned highly rated. Now I suppose it is possible that that family is uncorruptable, but that does seem a bit fishy.
