Indonesia's Merapi Volcano Erupts

Published October 26, 2010 | Associated Press

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – DEVELOPING: Volcano Merapi erupted Tuesday on Indonesia's Java island, according to a volcanologist.

Earlier in the day, Indonesia's most volatile volcano groaned and rumbled, leading scientists to warn that pressure building beneath its lava dome could trigger one of the most powerful blasts in years. Thousands of residents living on its slopes were moved to temporary camps.

An avalanche of rocks spilled down Mount Merapi's trembling slopes before dawn and gusts of hot ash shot 150 feet (50 meters) into the air.

"The energy is building up. ... We hope it will release slowly," government volcanologist Surono warned prior to the eruption. "Otherwise we're looking at a potentially huge eruption, bigger than anything we've seen in years."

The alert level for the 9,737-foot (2,968-meter) mountain had been raised to its highest level.

The major eruption was on 22 November 1994, at 10.15 hrs local time. A flow containing 220°C burst of gas, steam, and ashes killed more than 80 people. More than 1.3 million cubic yard of lava pour six kilometres down the mountainside along the river Boyong in Turgo village.

The threat is in the Canary Islands, not Italy. The fear is the associated quakes will cause massive undersea landslides displacing huge volumes of water.

I am less worried about volcanos that we can see, then
ones that we can not see.
If the Yellowstone caldera blows, it could mean the end of the entire USA, as we know it.

At the moment, however, one should be more worried about the
destruction of the USA from the Obamination, and his Marxist plans.

I’m about 1.2 miles from the ocean and the highest point between me and the water is about 12 feet ASL. So, if you hear this sumbitch go off, please give me a call. Thank you.

If Yellowstone blows, the world as we know it is gone, much less the US. That one is truly scary if volcanoes are what scares you.

you’d have several hours warning before the tsunami arrived. But unless you have a helicopter to leapfrog over the inevitable gridlock, perhaps it would be better to spend that time in blissful ignorance of your onrushing fate.

LOL--I bet you'll just keep that secret to yourself.

Seriously, though, 80 miles is nothing. You won't have the time.

Thanks!

I get the impression Earth is leaning up against a gas pump, having a cigarette.

Smiling takes 6.
