Police Raid Wrong Home, Scare Elderly Couple
NBC Chicago ^ | 10.8.10

Posted on 10/25/2010 11:21:33 PM PDT by Chet 99

Imagine the surprise on 84-year-old Anna Jakymek's face when Cook County Sheriff's officers broke into her house Thursday night in a drug raid gone wrong.

Jakymek and her husband Andrij, 89, who suffers from Alzheimers, were in bed when a squad of officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Gang Crimes Unit allegedly smashed their way into the elderly couple's Southwest side home. Sheriff's officers have not commented on the situation to confirm or deny reports.

“I hear bad noise, I thought somebody breaks in,” Jakymek said. "In that time about 20 guys came in and they said they were looking for guns and narcotics. They tell me to go into the bathroom ... They search everything."

At about 11:30 p.m. Thursday officers from the Cook County Sheriff’s Police Gang Crimes Unit executed a search warrant on the home on the 5600 block of South Kilbourn Avenue, the Chicago Tribune reports. They smashed in windows and broke down doors in their quest for crystal meth, cocaine, guns and money.

"I was scared," Anna said. "I thought it was gang." The Jaykmeks are Ukrainian immigrants who have lived in the house since 1967, according to their son Andrew. Andrew said his father is a retired tailor and his mother worked as an elevator operator into her late '70s for Peoples Gas Co.

Andrew Jakymek says when he arrived, police admitted they’d raided the wrong house.

The Cook County Sheriff is Tom Dart. The guy who arbitrarily decided he’s not gonna carry out any more court ordered evictions.

As soon as we entered the home, we knew this couple was not involved in the activity alleged.

That is why they tore the whole place apart. These guys are lying right out of the gate.

I’m probably engaging in a bit of Cold War nostalgia, but part of me thinks it would especially scary for someone from the former Soviet Union to have their doors kicked in by police in the middle of the night.

Not that it would be a pleasant experience for anyone, of course. /captain obvious

The wiseguy back home got busted for carrying around well over a million dollars worth of cocaine when he was in his 70s.

It wasn't for personal use folks.

It won’t be “personal” when someone blows them right back through the door! Everyone is entitled to a few mistakes!

Oh, Drug warrior street justice. It makes sense because there was noone next door that was a drug dealer, as is common in these mistaken identity cases.

Acyually it will be personal for them at that time. They will kill you and then get off the hook for it. I really don’t remember ever hearing of a citizen getting of the hook for killing a police officer. That is a one way street for members of law enforcement only.

You haven't been reading FR close enough. So, 10th time out ~ guy in Indianapolis had his dogs inside a fence on his yard.

Cops decided to shoot his dogs, so next thing you know he's out on the front porch yelling at them.

They had no warrant for anything (just shooting dogs ya' know) so they opened the gate and chased him into his house (pistols drawn).

He shot them both dead inside with a shotgun.

He walked. These guys had no business at his house. No business shooting at his property. No warrent to talk to him about. Nothing.

Two dead cops. BTW, this sort of thing is admittedly rare.

What’s the 4th amendment compared to a drug raid?

There was also the case of a man cleaning his guns in his hotel room. Police broke in on some kind of no-knock and he shot and killed them. He walked: justifiable self-defence.

Sorry I don’t have many details on that one - whether it was the wrong room or not, etc.

At least they didn’t kill their dog and shoot them, like they usually do.

One thing I often think about in these cases.
Do the police simply leave and offer an apology? Or, do they post a guard and call city maintenance to immediately put in a new door and frame? Do the innocent citizens have to wait for a lawsuit to repair the rest of the damage?
