Cao Is No Goner (Louisiana update)
The American Spectator ^ | October 21, 2010 | Quin Hillyer

Posted on 10/25/2010 6:34:25 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Here is the situation on the ground. Before the campaign really heated up, Cao actually led the polls by a wide margin, because his hard work and sincerity have made him very popular among all races and ethnicities in the New Orleans area. Once the campaign heated up and he was re-identified in the black community as a Republican, he dropped behind. But internal polls -- and my own anecdotal sources, as a native New Orleanian and veteran of New Orleans politics -- show him now within a typical survey's margin of error.

He also has momentum. National Democrats, thinking Cao a goner, have withdrawn campaign aid for Democratic opponent, state Rep. Cedric Richmond. But Richmond has a checkered past that the local media finally is starting to really focus on. Amidst other official ethics problems, Richmond lost his law license for lying in election qualifying papers in 2005. He's also under fire, or under investigation, for alleged financial shenanigans involving a non-profit with which he has been closely associated.

From his previous posts, I would say that he thinks we would.

After further review, maybe I am wrong. What we need is more Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Lindsey Graham, John McCain et. al. I've got a great ticket for the 2012 campaing. How does Licoln Chaffe/Colin Powell sound? Although you would never admit it, that is what you are arguing for.

but that 1 time we disagree is something as big as 0bamacare, then I cannot support him.

By agreement with Boehner, Cao's vote on Obamacare was held until the very last. If his vote had been needed to kill Obamacare, he would've voted "No". As it was, his vote was irrelevant (the measure had already passed) and he voted "Yea" -- reverting to the wishes of his constituents.

I really can't hold that against him.

Oh, and Cao voted against ObamaCare in the final vote.

I got that the first time you posted it. You, however, ignored my final question, what would Barry (AuH2O) do? I'm waiting.

No that isn’t what any of us are saying. We are saying that in this ONE district that is usually held by a Congressional Black Caucus member, you know the ones that are also usually part of the Democrat Socialists of America, that it would be light years better to have Cao instead.

Lack of priciple is not a strong argument. There's no right way to do the wrong thing.

That is the exact thinking that got us the people I mentioned. You are making this very easy for me.

Does Cao represent you? Or his district?

If you were in his district, you would have a choice between Joseph Cao and Cedric Richmond. That's it.

Who, pray tell, would you vote for?

Or would you stay home and pout...???

How is it better to elect someone who is already corrupt? The previous congressman, Dollar Bill Jefferson was sentenced to 13 years in the federal penitentiary for bribery, racketeering and a few other charges. Cao is not a corrupt and evil man. The D candidate is.

Memphis has elected a democrat Jew (Steve Cohen)in Memphis majority black district for past 2 elections and maybe a third this time.

It is a fluke as no serious democrat black candidate has run. Willie Herendon was damaged goods.

If he lived in New Orleans? Vote for Cao in the general election.

Thankfully, I do not live in the cesspool that is Louisianna. That said, I would have worked diligently to defeat this man during the primary. From what I have read, that shouldn't have been hard because everyone else in his district votes democrat. I will not cheer the prospect of him hanging on by a hair to win and cast votes with the 0bamal/Reid/Pelosi wing of the democrat party. Which has been the predominant theme of this thread. Too many people on Free Republic are concerned with reaching majority numbers, no matter the candidates needed to do so. I would rather be in principled minority than a majority full of RINOs. He is one of the RINOs that 0bama will be wooing with payoffs and sweetheart deals to gain "bipartisan" support for his wreckless agenda. I hope that when this guy is cutting deals with the 0bama administrtaion to protect his seat, all of you will privately tell me I was right in wishing him gone.

His not a principled man, either, much like Lindsey Graham. Enjoy him for the next session, if he wins.

Oh please. You are irrational here. It’s either full on socialist crook or Cao who does vote with the party most of the time.

Maybe you should work on getting that loon Ron Paul to retire.

“Give me 1 Demint for every 10 caos.”

Good point, but New Orleans is not about to electe DeMint. I don’t support Cao’s health care vote, but if he wasn’t in office, the district would elect a radical DemocRAT who’d support Obama & Pelosi on everything.

I'm irrational??? Really? Because I don't want the lone Republican to vote for 0bamacare reelected. Remember, if he wins he will be in line for chairmanships of important committees. I guess that is worth it, huh? Reward the RINOs for their sh!tty votes. That's a hell of a strategy to save the republic. Sorry, I am not irrational, your blind lust for power and trust in the republican party is irrational. I would rather have a new congressman/woman head up a committee than this 0bama voting RINO. Call me crazy, but that's how I feel.

Great, if you really want to see him gone, I suggest you donate money to the marxist RAT nominee while you’re at it. The RATs will be more than happy to assist you in dumping a guy who is pro-life, pro-tax cuts, pro-WOT, anti-SCHIP, anti cap-n-trade, anti “stimlus” bill, and opposed Obamacare when it MATTERED. You and the DNC can have a 100% socialist RAT in that seat instead of a right-of-center Republican who agrees with us on the majority of issues, LiberaTexan. Dance a jig all you want when you move that seat much further leftward, but you might want to consider posting about it on DU, where they agree with your plans.

>> Because I don't want the lone Republican to vote for 0bamacare reelected. <<

Obamacare passed WITHOUT Cao's support. He voted NAY on the bill that passed. You can spin it all you want, but we don't have Obamacare in this country because of Cao's vote. The earlier draft he did vote for is not the version that was enacted and his vote for that earlier draft legislation did absolutely nothing. You can scream treason all you want (as you noted, you would hate him even if voted yes during a 3 a.m. bar fight), but for most of us, we look at the actual results on a politician's actions and don't weigh their non-binding actions that much. Obama opposes gay marriage too, he doesn't get any brownie points for that since he's done nothing to actually stop it.

I oppose Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, Jim Jeffords, etc. I am one of the passionate freepers now arguing AGAINST the election of socialist "Republican" Mark Kirk for the U.S. Senate, who is to the left of many card-carrying Democrats in Illinois, including some Chicago machine Democrats. Cao is much more conservative than any of them, and Cao is representing a FAR more Democrat region. If you can't tell the difference between a CENTRIST Republican representing a LIBERAL district, and a LIBERAL Republican representing a CENTRIST district, that's your problem.

But here's the basic gist of it. RINOs like pro-partial birth abortion, cap n' tratior Mark Kirk are not "the best we can get" in Illinois. Much more conservative people than him have been elected before in Illinois, and will be again. There is no excuse for him voting that way. But Cao is truly the best we've ever had in Louisiana's 2nd district. That district is over 75% Democrat and has elected nothing but commie RATs for the last 120 years. A guy who votes with us 55% of the time there is a vast improvement over ANY other politician in the region.

You've already admitted you will vote against someone who agrees with you 99% of the time if they didn't do your bidding on a single bill. That doesn't make you a principled vote, it makes you a narrow minded single-issue ideologue who is advancing the leftist cause in this country and working to defeat people who have gone to bat for you numerous times to stop that agenda. Ronald Reagan warned against "conservatives" like you.

>> What about the most important issue of our time??? <<

Kinda like how every election is depicted as "the most important election of our time". The "most important issue of our time" seems to change from week to week. A few years ago, freepers were saying the passage of McCain-Feingold was "the most important issue of our time" and any Republican who voted for it would NEVER, ever get their support. They quickly forgot about that once Fred Thompson announced for President. So far, I've heard:

"The clinton impeachment vote was the most important issue of our time"

"The McCain-Feingold vote was the most important issue of our time"

"Staying the course in Iraq was the most important issue of our time" (the excuse used to re-elect commie Joe LIEberman)

"The amnesty bill vote was the most important issue of our time"

"The bailout vote was the the most important issue of our time"

"The Cap n' trade vote was the most important issue of our time"

"The vote over Obamacare was the most important issue of our time"

What will be the most important issue next week? I would submit to you that Joseph Cao voted the right way on most of these issues previously claimed to "the most important vote EVER". He even voted the right way on the Obamacare bill when the legislation came to a floor vote and was passed, yet you choose to ignore it so you can demonize him for voting the wrong way when it didn't count and didn't change anything.
