In 1976, a Chicago newspaper columnist wrote that Jerry Brown would get "the moonbeam vote."The writer was Mike Royko, who then started referring to the then-38-year-old Brown as "Gov. Moonbeam." Royko was suggesting that Brown was attracting California's New Age crowd. Brown was a strong supporter of space exploration and many of the earliest statewide green initiatives. Yet he also gained a reputation as a fiscal conservative, refusing many perks that came with the governorship.Royko eventually retracted his statement, and in 1991 in the Chicago Tribune, he called the moniker "null, void and deceased."

Anybody who wants to be gov of CA should be committed!
Interesting. I always wondered about that.
You come up with the most interesting posts.
Thanks.
We still lost it ultimately because of Democrats.
He wasn’t any smarter when he was young.
Mike funny? He got all his ideas from me.
If you want off my ping list get over it!
Being in San Fran, you should be in a pretty good position to offer an educated opinion.
Manson, huh?
I can’t disagree.
"....And if you agree with me, call my 800 number '1-800-NOT-FLAKY.'"

Royko eventually retracted his statement, and in 1991 in the Chicago Tribune, he called the moniker "null, void and deceased."Nowadays it's sufficient to refer to Jerry Brown as "Ex-Governor Loser" or just "That Crook".
Slats could probably answer that better than me. I’d have to guess and say it was out of respect for Bernie Neistein.
I read most of Royko’s columns when I was stationed at Grand Forks AFB between 83-86. Haven’t read any of his books.
One of the few Democrats I could read and enjoy and make me laugh.
It is a mistake to call Jerry Brown Moonbeam.
It makes him sound like a well-intended, if goofy, hippie.
Brown, in fact, is a vicious, evil, corrupt, lying ideologue bent on destruction.
Better we should call him Manson.
This person is the first one to say it like it is about ol J.B.
I remember the folks talking about what evil he did to this state back in the 70’s and J.B. was practically all that was spoken about all through the 70’s because he messed up the state so bad, and now he has the nads to run again???
