In the fury of the firing of Juan Williams much of the tenor of what is happening at NPR is being overlooked. His firing is completely outrageous but it is a symptom of a larger problem at the news organization. NPR is saying that Juan Williams crossed a line with his opinion. I have been covering The White House since 1993, and I have heard plenty of opinion. Most of it has not made it into print or on air, but journalists are human and they have opinions, hopes and fears. Most consumers of news, I think, would rather know

I’m surprised at these comments coming from Ratner. I remember hearing her on radio a few years ago and she was a screaming liberal. An epiphany, you think?

National Politburo Radio is dead-on. NPR and PBS are just two warts on a larger, dank, sweaty fungus known as the CPB, from where their Congressional (read: TAXPAYER) funding originates and trickles down. One or two sacrificial lambs like Schiller are a useless Dr. Feelgood potion. Cut the head off the snake: abolish the CPB, and let the Bohemian types totally fund their own alt propaganda. Besides, I doubt American discourse is going to suffer too much if we're deprived of the next Ken Burns documentary.
"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

Juan is not a reporter.
He's a commentator.
Two totally different animals.
A commentator is free, in a free country, to voice opinions, i.e. COMMENTS.
That said, NPR picked the one last person to fire, in their zeal to comply with their new daddy warbucks $1,800,000 payoff to go after FOX.
They may have thought that firing one of their own as the first shot across the bow would be safe, as he was appearing on FOX. Wrong. What a boomerang!
They fired - on the PHONE - the only black news commentator they had (riled blacks) and a man that is liked - or at least respected for being an honest man - by both dems and pubbies. And then that jerk pontificates about how he probably should see his psychiatrist, opening NPR up to a major slander suit. And all this in the middle of fund raising week.
Juan is furious, especially, as he said, about impugning his sanity. He may just sue. I hope he does. And I hope he wins exactly $1,800,000.
In the meantime, other outfits - like Media Matters, who also got a large chunk of money to go after FOX and Republicans, aren't likely to make such hasty and rash actions. By the time they figure out to do so relatively safe, the elections will be over - and that close to 3 million bucks Soros gave the two outfits, in lieu of directly to dem campaigns, will have been for naught. Yes, Virginia, there does seem to be a God - and He might just be chuckling over all this.

What’s incredibly ironic (and I’m sure the irony is totally lost on NPR) about Juan getting fired for expressing his opinion is that their whole programming is biased opinion!
So, according to their “standards” they should shut down the whole operation.

It's the somewhat parochial concept of 'Do as I say, not as I do'. Liberals wield the torch of plantation mentality like a battle flag.

That came out to be a very bizarre double-posting. Guess we're too close to Halloween, and the Demons of Liberalism Past are infesting my keyboard.
Wait - are they allowed to plagiarize Dickens on diametric holidays?

Ive worked for Fox as a contributor since 1997, and as a liberal I found a wonderful home for my viewpoints.
How many Freepers ever thought we would be defending Juan Williams and Ellen Ratner?

The larger problem at NPR is the public exposure of the twittering nitwit who runs the freak show.

I, like many on the right, were at best ambivalent regarding Juan. He was always marginally annoying, but never repulsive.
Now, he will become a hero to the reactionary types.
A wise nan from India once explained to me that every villager admires any man that kills the man eating tiger, regardless of his past.

National Progressive Radio is a better fit and accurate.

She was one of Clinton’s main defenders during impeachment and is basically Rahm Emanuel in a pantsuit. She’ll use this piece to pretend she’s completely unbiased and “goes after both sides”. Nonsense.

I agree with you. Juan was more of a pesky cat who got into the trash rather than a man-eating tiger.
