Reminds me of a childhood fear I was always a little leery about swimming in the St. Croix river probably because I have 5 brothers and they told me sharks could be in it that they could have made their way up from the ocean lol.
I had it in my head there were monster fish in it and of course it only made it worse when I dove in one time right into a huge sturgeon.
I swear I thought my heart was going to give out before I could swim to shore (a relatively short distance as the big dock really wasn’t that far out since it deepens quickly) if I had known about that thing I probably would have never swam in it at all.

You clearly were led into a sucker punch. I hope you didn’t leave squid marks on your underwear.
Bull sharks do swim up freshwater rivers from the ocean.
"What's interesting about the bull shark is that it's not just found in the ocean. It's one of only two species of shark that can live in freshwater -- the other is the rare river shark."
"Bulls are commonly seen in rivers and lakes, and not just in tidal creeks -- these guys really get around. They've been reported 2,200 miles (3,700 km) upstream the Amazon River and as far up the Mississippi River as Illinois."
That's actually possible. The author of "Jaws" was partly inspired by the true story of a Great White" that swam up a river (I believe, in New York State) and killed and ate a young boy.
