Twenty-four years in the military doesn't count as public service, at least according to Virginia Democratic Congressman Jim Moran.
In a video that's gone viral online, Moran is heard telling a Democratic gathering earlier this month that his opponent, Republican Patrick Murray, is just another unqualified GOP candidate.
"What [Republicans] do is find candidates, usually stealth candidates, that haven't been in office, haven't served or performed in any kind of public service," Moran said. "My opponent is typical, frankly."
The trouble is, Murray is a retired Army colonel with 24 years of service--including combat in Iraq. The idea that such an extensive military record doesn't qualify as "public service" has left a sour taste in Murray's mouth.

Heh. If he isn’t in trouble this election, he may be in trouble next with so many Dems and their staffers leaving North Virginia in a couple months. ; )
Honor, integrity, accountability, respect, loyalty. Those are the virtues of military service.
Sadly, many public servants have no idea what those words are.
Ask yourself, you stupid politician, what institution do the American people consistently trust and admire over ALL others?
Hmm. Can anyone say Barack Hussein Obama?
I don’t recall anyone telling Dwight Eisenhower he didn’t have any public service experience.
moran and his ilk are consistently performing public disservice. Why doesn’t this fool, moran, go beat up an eight year old kid or his ex-wife or something? moran is a typical entitled loser who has nothing to offer society other than his repulsive presence.
And, no doubt, Mr. Moron will be reelected by the mindless Demobots in his district who walk around mumbling “it was Bush’s fault, it was Bush’s fault...” If a Republican would say something like this he would be driven out of office by his own party.
In recent years it's become quite obvious to everyone that he's going senile.
So, will they vote for him again? With the Democrats out of power in the House a vote for Moran is a throw-away. That district has usually voted to protect themselves so my guess is this is Moran's last campaign.
Their problem is that the Democrat special interests have lost ground economically and will have to lay off some people to hire any of these people.
This is no small problem for them. The nonprofit (and special interest) employment base in Moran's district is at least 60,000 people. Existing layoffs in that sector already constitute a major part of the local unemployment statistics (which appear low at 4.5%, but are actually among the worst for private sector employment given the presence of so many government employees in the area. To wit: 1 out of 7 jobs).
When it comes to the nonprofits think Las Vegas with its 14% unemployment ~ it's an unmitigated disaster for those folks so there's really no room for the coming Democrat office holders and appointees.
Quite frankly no one knows what is going to happen in the DC suburbs whether in Maryland or Virginia. We've had 50% drops in the value of real-estate and construction ground to a halt here just like everywhere else. 401(k) (type) accounts have tanked. Even the tourist industry has gone into the dumpster.
there’s a spelling error, it should be MORON
If THIS did not hurt him in January 2006 at a townhall with that pos, john murtha, NOTHING will!
"Yes sir my name is Mark Seavey and I just want to thank you for coming up here. Until about a month ago I was Sgt Mark Seavey infantry squad leader, I returned from Afghanistan. My question to you,(applause)"Like yourself I dropped out of college two years ago to volunteer to go to Afghanistan, and I went and I came back. If I didn't have a herniated disk now I would volunteer to go to Iraq in a second with my troops, three of which have already volunteered to go to Iraq. I keep hearing you say how you talk to the troops and the troops are demoralized, and I really resent that characterization. (applause) The morale of the troops that I talk to is phenomenal, which is why my troops are volunteering to go back, despite the hardships they had to endure in Afghanistan.
"And Congressman Moran, 200 of your constituents just returned from Afghanistan. We never got a letter from you; we never got a visit from you. You didn't come to our homecoming. The only thing we got from any of our elected officials was one letter from the governor of this state thanking us for our service in Iraq, when we were in Afghanistan. That's reprehensible. I don't know who you two are talking to but the morale of the troops is very high."
And what was Moran's quick response, you ask?
"That wasn't in the form of a question, it was in the form of a statement. But, uhh... let's go over here." And he took the next question.
Jim Moran and every person that has ever cast a vote for him is a disgrace.
The best hope for this yo-yo’s defeat actually lies in the Virginia Assembly. He’s in a safe district that desperately needs to be redrawn to become more competitive.
I “met” him last year. I went to a Bald Eagle Release, not knowing that he was going to be there. I just wanted to see the birds. So I get there, and we are all waiting...and waiting. Finally someone gets up and announces that yes, they are starting late, but Congressman Moran had not yet arrived. He finally decided to show up 45 minutes late, and then set into a talk, which sounded like an election rally for himself...not a scientific talk about bald eagles, which was what I was hoping to expose my children to. Meanwhile, the poor birds were stuck in dog crates, waiting to see the real world...being held up by a huge ego.
Finally he shut up, they released the eagles, which was so beautiful, and then Moran proceeded to walk through the crowd, shaking hands with everyone he could corner, asking where they lived. I was really creeped out.
Anyway, that’s my Moran story. What a moron.
Forgot to mention this. Although his district includes many military installations, it’s not likely that he gets many votes from them (or in his case worry about not getting votes from them). My husband is stationed at the Pentagon, and we live in NoVA, but we vote by absentee ballot in our home of record.
Is that like saying that being a Congressman is not public service or not a used car salesman or thief, etc., Moran moron? =.=
Thanks for the analysis. I hope “we” are smart enough when we finally get a President, Senate and Congress together again to fully defund all of them. “Progressives” work for pay, not volunteer like we do. Their movement will be a shadow of itself without government funds.
Anyway, Moran's district is designed to corral as many Democrats as possible into a single district so that we can have THREE other districts essentially free of their kind so that we can install Republicans.
If you were to dissipate Moran's district, you'd increase the chance of electing more Democrats.
So, no thank you. Keep these pukes rounded up in their own small world.
Well as usual Moran proves he is a MORON.
If public service is cheating, stealing and LYING to the public. Then Moran has a point.
If PS is about Leadership, Responsibility, Hard Work, and the willingness to give your life for your fellow Americans, then Moran you are a POS MORON.
this is what Dummies REALLY think about the military.
Were you aware of where he’d been putting his hands before he started shaking others?
