Tom Tancredo this afternoon criticized his opponent in the gubernatorial race, Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, as an out-of-touch elitist after video surfaced of Hickenlooper talking of "backwards thinking" in rural areas of the Interior West.
In the video, Hickenlooper is responding to an question from transgender journalist Eden Lane regarding why the Matthew Shepard Foundation would establish its headquarters in Denver.
"I think a couple of things, I mean, you know, the tragic death of Matthew Shepard occurred in Wyoming," Hickenlooper says in the video taken in late 2009. "Colorado and Wyoming are very similar. We have some of the same, you know backwards thinking
in the kind of rural Western areas you see in, you know, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico."
The National Review Online posted the video on its website today, and it soon became a talking point in Colorado's race for governor.
Tancredo, a former GOP Congressman running for governor as an American Constitution Party candidate, issued a press release saying that Hickenlooper had smeared all of rural Colorado.
Shepard was a gay Wyoming college student who was murdered in 1998. His death galvanized gay rights advocates to push for passage of federal legislation that made sure hate crimes can also include violence motivated by sexual orientation.
"To suggest that people in rural Colorado are 'backwards' because they don't share your left-wing values reinforces once again just how out of touch you are," Tancredo said. "Mr. Mayor, you owe the people of rural Colorado an apology."
George Merritt, the spokesman for the Hickenlooper campaign, said: "John was making the point that the kind of intolerance that led to Matthew Shepard's murder is not unique to a single community in Wyoming."
Merritt added: "It's something that can happen in any community. He wishes he had articulated that point
Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper. (Karl Gehring, Denver Post file)better to make it clear that any community is susceptible to hatred, but he continues to feel strongly that the intolerance that killed Shepard is backwards and not acceptable."
George Merritt sounds like Robert Gibbs, dumb, dumber and dumbass.
Hickenlooper sounds like a fool. Now he is implying that all of the outlying counties in Colorado contain anti-gay killers just waiting for prey.
Must be that high altitude in Denver. Does brain damage to leftists.
Well, that would explain it.
Loopy Hick?
Oops! Wish someone would pay to have this played during every single 10 pm newscast in Colorado for the next week. I can just imagine how it would go down in Rifle and La Junta!
Usually the libs just smear Laramie or the State of Wyoming. But Hick smearing his own state??? What a putz.
I’m not sure where this’ll wind up in the print version of the Denver Post (by the obit’s I’m guessing) but I hope the Grand Junction, Colorado Springs & Pueblo papers run this front page! *fingerX*
Right now it’s on the front page of the Post’s web page. If lots if people would go comment on it, ahem, that may affect where it runs.
mountainlion - your names for Hick made me LOL!
Tom ping!!
Mark Levin has just endorsed Tom Tancredo.Tom will be on Mark's show in the next half hour
This could put Tancredo over the top...but this has to get out there now and often until Nov 2.
Looks like we’re going to have to call Reddenbacher to order popcorn to eat while we watch Hickenlooper and his pooper-scooper.
Being from Massachsuetts I know a Ted Kennedy clone when I see one.
Looks like Colorado’s about to get a no-BS guy.
Shepard was not killed because he was a fag.
Yeah, Having morals and standing up for what is right is “backwards thinking” to these “progressives”
Dems got to go back 12 years to one incident to find a brush big enough to paint all of rural Colorado with.
Drug deal gone wrong, IIRC.
