Opinion JUAN WILLIAMS: I Was Fired for Telling the Truth
Fox News ^ | October 21, 2010 | By Juan Williams

Posted on 10/21/2010 1:45:41 PM PDT by combat_boots

Yesterday NPR fired me for telling the truth. The truth is that I worry when I am getting on an airplane and see people dressed in garb that identifies them first and foremost as Muslims.

This is not a bigoted statement. It is a statement of my feelings, my fears after the terrorist attacks of 9/11 by radical Muslims. In a debate with Bill O’Reilly I revealed my fears to set up the case for not making rash judgments about people of any faith. I pointed out that the Atlanta Olympic bomber -- as well as Timothy McVeigh and the people who protest against gay rights at military funerals -- are Christians but we journalists don’t identify them by their religion.

And I made it clear that all Americans have to be careful not to let fears lead to violation of anyone’s constitutional rights, be it to build a mosque, carry the Koran or drive a New York cab without fear having your throat slashed. Bill and I argued after I said he has to take care in the way he talks about the 9/11 attacks so as not to provoke bigotry.

This was an honest, sensitive debate hosted by O’Reilly. At the start of the debate Bill invited me, challenged me to tell him where he was wrong for stating the fact that “Muslims killed us there,” in the 9/11 attacks. He made that initial statement on the ABC program, "The View," which caused some of the co-hosts to walk off the set. They did not return until O’Reilly apologized for not being clear that he did not mean the country was attacked by all Muslims but by extremist radical Muslims.

You just went out of your way to do it, Juan, and it's false.

One major flaw in Juan's logic -- none of the 19 terrorists on 9/11 was dressed in Muslim garb that identified them, first and foremost, as a Muslim. Thus, one shouldn't fear a Muslim in Muslim garb; one should fear a Muslim. The odds are overwhelming that if a randomly selected Muslim is not an extremist terrorist, he is a supporter, at least tacitly, of extremist terrorists.

All liberals, and perhaps many Muslims, will ridicule my viewpoint. Liberal ridicule I welcome, because it signals to me the validity of my position (liberal viewpoints are excellent contrarian indicators), buy Muslim's who differ with me must explain why they are not voiciferously and constantly putting down Muslim terror and standing with America. If it's because they don't value America or want to change America to suite their religious views, my position is validated. If it's because they fear Muslim terrorists more than they love America, my position is validated.

Muslim terrorists are my enemies. Muslims who tacitly support Muslim terrorists are my enemies.

“BTW, just what is a moderate muslim anyway - just a little bit into sharia law and jihad on infidels?”

If they use five sticks of TNT in the bomb vest rather than ten, then they’re moderate. A hand grenade identifies the true jihadi liberal.

“I asked why she would fire me without speaking to me face to face and she said there was nothing I could say to change her mind, the decision had been confirmed above her....”

The head of NPR just outed herself as a flunkie.

And now they have used an honest statement of feeling as the basis for a charge of bigotry to create a basis for firing me. Well, now that I no longer work for NPR let me give you my opinion. This is an outrageous violation of journalistic standards and ethics by management that has no use for a diversity of opinion, ideas or a diversity of staff (I was the only black male on the air). This is evidence of one-party rule and one sided thinking at NPR that leads to enforced ideology, speech and writing. It leads to people, especially journalists, being sent to the gulag for raising the wrong questions and displaying independence of thought.

Daaaaaaaamn. That is going to leave one hell of a bruise.

BTW, I have yet to hear a single leftie presstitute stand up for this guy. Not one. Whereas conservative Mary Katharine Ham (megababe and the best thing to ever come out of this Godforsaken town of Durham, North Carolina), the other participant in the segment on The O'Blowhard Factor that got Williams fired, is all over the place defending him and savaging NPR for this assault. How's it feel, Juan, knowing that the leftists that "had your back" only had it so they could jam a knife in it?

The definition of a conservative: a liberal who has been mugged.

Mr. Williams, you were mugged - by a member of your "family".

why doesn’t NPR just admit what is going on here, that they simply can’t stand to have a black man in a position of power and opinion at NPR. That is why he was fired. They are just like all the other liberal racists, hiding behind their progressive chants but true racists underneath. Are there any black anchors at MSNBC in prime time? NOpe.

RACISTS!!!

But, while firing Juan was unjust, let us not forget that Juan is a liberal too, and he has been quite critical of Palin. Kudos for Palin for taking the high classy road and speaking out on his behalf, but Juan shoudl be thankful that conservatives are rushing to his defense. just goes to show you that conservatives are good decent jsut people, while the liberals are just plain racist thugs.

[Okay, everyone on the Right has rushed to the defense of this man, although they disagree with him on many issues. Have any of his Leftie allies come to his defense? Are any of them standing up for him? ]

They would defend Robert Byrd tot he end of the earth but Trent Lott trying to be nice to an old man on his birthday was grounds for his removal.....

You know, as soon as I posted that I realized Muslims always have a good chuckle when someone’s head is getting sawed off.

I was thinking of the generally bad-tempered, perpetually “humilitated” types who we see on the news every night.

I stand corrected, lol!

Juan should have said that seeing people in muslim garb in an airport makes him as nervous as a choir boy in the vatican.

The left would have self destructed with the growing exponential paradox of that statement in their mind.....

I agree. I watch virtually no television, but occasionally I have seen clips of Juan Williams, and while I didn’t agree with him, he was obviously intelligent and knowledgeable, a good speaker, and took his (conservative) opponent seriously.

I thought this article was really interesting in what it revealed about the pressure put on intelligent and thereby non-conforming people on NPR.

I was in college in the late 60’s and I was one of the ones who got spat on for going to class when SDS, made up entirely of the privileged children of the wealthy, was having boycotts on my campus. I was working in a restaurant and putting myself through school.

I had gone to one of the elite NYC high schools and I had friends who had gone on to Columbia and Barnard, which was at that time an all-women’s college. One of them invited me to an SDS meeting, but I didn’t go; nonetheless, I later found my name on the list of attendees.

In any case, what they told me about SDS was that all chapters had something called “crit-self-crit” (I’m spelling this the way I heard it) which was evidently something common to radical Communist organizations. What they do is sit down and accuse themselves of faults, and if they don’t accuse themselves, somebody else does it for them and then they have to acknowledge it and accept their punishment.

Stalin killed many of his inner circle this way. Juan Williams was accused by the inner circle and has now metaphorically been killed.

"Hey Juan, McVeigh was an agnostic Darwinist."

Perhaps Fox News should fire Juan for repeating lies intended to harm Christianity by conflating it with radical Islamic jihad... ;-)

I have to confess that I would not miss Juan, OR for that matter, Pinheaded Statist and Obama Apologist Bill O'Bloviator... (Not even a little bit...)

Anyone who feels differently than Juan is either a)a lunatic or b)a liar. DU is full of both. They have a virulent hatred of Juan for daring to be associated with Fox. But I bet a few of them who are ranting and raving now would pee their pants if they were sitting on a plane and a Muslim sat down next to them.

Juan...your liberal buddies threw you under the bus for two reasons: 1. You dared to say the truth about Muslims instead of being politically correct. 2. You appear on Fox News which is verboten because Fox is not part of the Obama controlled MSM.

Your comment should be highlighted and you should be given the respect and gratitude you deserve, hondact. Spend the time alone on Saturday, but today you are with FRiends.

You survived a terrible attack by Muslim terrorists — the 1983 Beirut barracks bombing. God bless you sir.

That event resulted in the worst single-day death toll for U.S. Marines since the battle of Iwo Jima, a distressing fact but one which we ought not forget. Army and Navy personnel, were also unfortunately lost. Many U.S. civilians were also grievously wounded there.
