Somewhere between the Jordanian border and the Green Line, we'll call it Kiryat M'uyamim, night before last, IDF/Police officers rousted out two families at 3 a.m. Their belongings were cast out and tractors and bulldozers destroyed the small hovels that they had built with their own hands. There was no advance warning of this. Neighbors took the unfortunate families in, and the next day everyone went to work. I was in Kiryat M'uyamim last night. At dark, a cement mixer descended the hill towards Kiryat M'uyamim, along with a procession of several small cars. My wife, young son and I followed them down the hill and quickly got a ride. On the smaller, adjacent hill of Kiryat M'uyamim, on a ledge further down an embankment, a small flat area had been smoothed over, marked off with rope, enclosed within a makeshift partition of boards and rocks, and the floor of the enclosed area covered with a network of rebar, some of it straight, some of it bent into odd shapes. A chute was set up under the cement mixer, and a crowd of men, boys and women gathered round, waiting for the cement to pour. Those men with long boots on waited with gardening hoes, plastic buckets, broad swaths of plywood and other makeshift tools. The concrete poured, and the men in the boots hastened to spread the mixture evenly throughout the enclosure. Slowly the enclosure filled up with the cement, and one of the men took off his boots and told the older boys to line up and each take a turn spreading. The boys whooped with excitement, and lined up, eagerly taking off their shoes. My son was in the back of the line, because he's only eight. Some boys had to be repeatedly ordered to give the next one a turn, so absorbed were they with the work. Women filmed the progress with digital cameras. Before all the boys got a turn, however, the cement truck pulled away and two men with a large plank and two long handles took over, meticulously plumbing the fresh-poured mixture, trying to give it an even consistency. The entire undertaking lasted for about an hour, during which a military-green jeep with a light on its roof hovered around on the road above us. People still watched, but nearby one of the residents, a musician, also under threat, was going to give a free concert in protest against the bulldozing, so my son and I finally climbed up the embankment and waited for the show to begin.
My son asked me if what we had witnessed was like when he stands up to bullies at school. I told him that it was the very same thing, only the bullies are bigger, and their threats are much more real.
I'll stand with those dispossessed families any day, and help lay foundations with them any night.
I understand that. I’ve spent enough time on FR to be able to read between the lines, though.
I had thought that I said that, because I gave the town in question a fictitious Israeli name. I’m sorry I didn’t conform to the high journalistic standards you expect from Freep posters. I’m sorry Freep posters can’t tell the difference between an Israeli and an Arabic name. I am sorry my sincere desire to put down what I saw, which was intense, caused me to forget such fundamentals as paragraph breaks.
I’m just a witness, describing a scene to people I thought were both (1) sympathetic to a story about the IDF rousting their own; and (2) familiar enough with Hebrew to know it when they see it (I don’t know French, but I know French names when I see them).
Obviously, I was wrong in my second assumption.
I am not convinced that I was wrong about my first assumption, although this thread has shown little evidence of that. But I can rely on my experience over the years of posting here to reassure me on that score, which brings me to my main complaint:
the “trollish smell”.
If you suspect someone of being a troll, simply search his screen name for prior posts, and you’ll soon know what he’s all about. That way, you won’t throw around baseless accusations and thereby make unnecessary enemies.
Being a journalist has nothnig to do with it.
Being understood and being clear enough to get the message across does.
Usually when people mention the IDF rousting people and bulldozing things, it’s in regards to those peaceful fun loving muslims who just love pizza parties so much they explode with joy, heavy sarcasm about the muzzies if you didn’t notice.
And since you left out who you were speaking about, it was difficult to determine your intent.
Now, you can take my suggestion to ask the mods to insert the missing info, or you can continue to whine about how you were treated because you were careless.
Your choice.
“Ive spent enough time on FR to be able to read between the lines, though.”
When dealing with an article that sounds as if it could be sympathetic to the ‘peaceful muzzies’ one shouldn’t have to.
No it wasn’t clear who you were talking about. I support Israelies building anything anywhere within their land without international interference.
As for Rachel Corrie, I’d like to dedicate a single share of CAT in memory...
Wasn’t there a finding that Palestinians and Middle Eastern Jews have indistinguishable DNA? There was. This makes the whole affair about as world news worthy as the Hatfield, McCoy feud.
Yes, speaking of bulldozers, Corries spawners are going to or already have ‘confronted’ the driver of the bulldozer that nicked their dear sweet little crumpled dumpling.
Rachel did not have life ending injuries prior to being put into the red crescent ambulance, she would have lived but been very sorry she did.
So what happened in that ambulance?
And for God’s sake WHY are her parents being HANDED the driver of the bulldozer?!
I understand your assumptions. However, being in Israel, you may not know some of our assumptions.
Being within the geographical boundaries of Israel or Judah does not necessarily mean the families were Jewish. We know there are quite a few Arab, "Palestinian", and other ethnic groups there. We also know the conflict going on with Arabs encroaching on Jewish land. These families could very well have been Arab living in Jewish land that they were trying to steal from Israel, just by settling there.
So while you are demanding that we trust you, please understand that we (viewing this from several thousand miles away) need more information than you originally supplied in order to view this through your eyes.
I assume that was the reason you posted it--so we can see what is happening through your eyes. We'd like to hear more of what is going on over there, but you also need to communicate better for us to see what you are seeing.
Thank you.
Why just 2 families? If this was done to appease, why not bulldoze the entire village?
I suspect there is more to this story than meets the eye. Do you know these familes well? Have they lived there long? Did they own the property or were they squatters? Here in the US there are squatters who try to occupy homes which are vacant due to foreclosures.(See story below)
I understand you were passionate as you wrote, but it was almost as if I was reading an account of the Nazi’s displacing Jews before WWII.
AT any rate, I will be looking forward to more info and maybe you can post the video taken by the women.
GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. - Sergeant Jim Casey and the Gwinnett County eviction squad look for squatters or stubborn homeowners as they approach homes with guns drawn.
“People losing their jobs, losing income. We average 12 to 15 a day easy, could be more than that,” said Sgt. Casey.
Real Estate experts say foreclosures hit an all time high about two years ago. Gwinnett County leads the Metro Atlanta area. Most foreclosures happen quietly, only a small percentage end up in evictions.
In August of 2006, the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Department received 595 eviction orders, in 2007 that number jumped to 680 and this year, 814 crossed the sheriff’s desk.
“They are wickedly prevalent. They are in all incomes levels, all neighborhoods, all price categories, all people,” said Pat Alderman, owner of Sanctuary Real Estate Inman Park.
Alderman said she doesn’t know a neighborhood in Metro Atlanta without a foreclosure. According to Alderman, a foreclosure in your neighborhood directly affects your bottom line.
“The primary reason you will care is financial impact to you. As a national average, foreclosures cost other homeowners, other sellers, $5,000 per closing,” said Alderman.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga — DeKalb County prosecutors say theyve cracked open an elaborate attempt to steal empty houses across North Georgia.
Channel 2 Action News teamed up with police and the FBI to share information uncovered during a monthlong investigation. So far, four people are in jail and police have arrest warrants for four others.
The suspects call themselves sovereign citizens. They are anti-government extremist and refuse to answer to state or local authority. The members often refuse to pay taxes or register their vehicles. Some told Channel 2 Investigative reporter, Jodie Fleischer, their homes are considered sovereign land.
“Frankly, it’s rather absurd the philosophies and techniques they’re espousing, but people will buy into that and try it,” said FBI Agent Steve Emmett.
Fleischer confronted Gregory and Linda Ross, who were living at a 5-bedroom home on South Goddard Road in DeKalb County. A deed posted in the window of the house claimed Jermaine Gibson owned the property.
Records show the $1 million home is actually owned by a bank. Authorities
say Gibson filed fraudulent paperwork to take the house around the same time the bank was forcing out the previous owners who were in foreclosure. According to the deed, Gibson signed over the property to himself for free.
Gibson has also filed paperwork declaring himself a sovereign citizen and immune to the laws of Georgia.
DeKalb police said they caught him and Joseph Dion Lawler trying to get the locks changed on a $1 million home on Windsor Parkway. Lawlers name was on that fraudulent deed, and so was Gibsons address on South Goddard Road.
Prosecutors say the scheme can force real owners of the homes to prove it in court. Buyers are sometimes delayed from closing on houses.
“They’re able to tie up the legal system by filing bogus paperwork and engaging in paper terrorism against anybody who dare comes after them,” said DeKalb County Assistant District Attorney John Melvin.
Court records show Lawler has filed a lawsuit against Chase Bank for foreclosing on his home. Gibson filed a federal lawsuit against the Gwinnett County sheriff and other officials, after he was arrested several times.
When Fleischer approached the home on South Goddard Road, one sovereign citizen told her, “Once you come on the property, you have made contract with us, and believe me, it’s not going to end the way you think. It’s going to be non-violent. It’s going to be all on paperwork. So you have been warned.”
Based partly on Fleischers research on the deeds, the DeKalb County SWAT went to the South Goddard Road property with a search warrant. The eviction team that accompanied them hauled away all of the sovereign citizens possessions, and detectives found evidence for a racketeering case against Gibson, Gregory and Linda Ross, and others.
Police also have arrest warrants for others whove filed fraudulent deeds, including Joseph Dion Lawler, Eliyshuwa Yisrael and Richard Terrence Jenkins.
The deeds reach from Norcross, to Snellville, to Augusta, and even include a $13 million shopping center in Buckhead.
Members of the group often witness each others documents, which makes them easier to link. Melvin said, “The more paperwork you have the bigger the web, the more people you can catch.”
One of the sovereign citizens authorities spotted at the South Goddard address witnessed a fraudulent deed for Kenith Rey. Police say Rey is in the Fulton County Jail after Sandy Springs police said they caught him living in a $2 million home on Tara Trail.
“I’m shocked,” said home builder Mark Phillips. This house is certainly not finished. It’s not even a livable house.”
Investigators say by using the fake deed, Rey was able to establish electricity, and alarm service at the property.
Melvin said he plans to push for legislative changes. “Personally, what I’d like to see is a little more verification before a property is able to be deeded to another person. You just can’t go to a clerk of court and deed a property to yourself.

Sorry, it was kind of confusing.
My understanding is that everyone owns the individual parcels of land on which their homes are built, but there is an exorbitant building permit fee that has to be paid before they build there, that under law the same fee is required of any Arab, but it is never enforced against anyone but Jews, so the residents there refuse to pay, even if they can afford. Thus, the entire village is under threat of bulldozing, but this time it was only the two families who got it. I know one of the residents well, and he’s been threatened, but was not worried because they hadn’t given him a specific date to get out. These two families, however, were not given a specific date either. They just knocked on their doors in the middle of the night (SURPRISE!) and started demolition. Not even a pretense of due process, even as that’s understood over here. Thus the fictitious name I gave the village: Kiryat Ham’uyamim (town of the threatened).
The piece process is making some nasty changes here, and I fear this is only the beginning. Bibi’s still resisting at least, but it doesn’t look quite so photogenic up close.

Now, on to the 4,000 or so demolition orders for construction in East Jerusalem. I won't be holding my breath. This construction may have been illegal, under Israeli law, but selective enforcement of the law is a far more serious problem.

No I won't hold my breath either.
Example for us Americans! What they tear down in the night, we build right back up!! Good on ya! I love it. Gets my ole rebel blood surging!
I read it as a low-profile attempt at state coercion of the citizenry, to force compliance through intimidation. These rascally settlers, setting up shop wherever they want, are throwing a wrench into the ruling elite's well orchestrated peace dealings. Barack's got Bibi on the verge of a permanent deal, doncha' know.
A very minor Ruby Ridge/Waco incident, just without the screaming, flames and dead bodies.
Here, here! I raise my glass and toast your comment!
Yes, the Ruby Ridge comparison particularly appropriate, 3 am the potential for tragedy is there.
Thank you so much for the ping! I enjoy these mushroom stories.
I don’t want to criticize but it was very hard to follow what was happening. I think you were trying to be so literary that you forgot that we WEREN’T there. It made sense to you since you were there. You have to write for your audience.
The guy who brought up paragraphs was being kind to you.
Shalom.
