Should gun owners have their heads examined?
Gun Rights Examiner ^ | 20 October, 2010 | David Codrea

"Prospective gun owners would have to pass a mental health test before being granted a firearms licence under recommendations submitted by a NSW coroner," the AAP story on World News Australia tells us.

Why?

After inquiring into the self-inflicted shooting death of a man during a confrontation with police in Sydney, Deputy State Coroner Paul MacMahon found the licensed gun owner had posed a "very great danger" to many unsuspecting people...An inquest, in November 2009 and March 2010, heard police evidence that the man intended to kill numerous people at random on the day he visited Eastwood Mall.

That's pretty terrifying. Why wouldn't Australians want to make sure people like this are disarmed?

Why wouldn't we?

Could we if we wanted to?

Depending on the source you consult, a widely accepted estimate is that there are 80 million gun owners in this country. What good does it do to only screen "prospective gun owners" when there are so many existing ones, all being subjected to the stresses of life, to changing medical conditions, to challenges and tragedies and life-altering events that can test the limits of human endurance? And while the odds are that peaceable gun owners will, as a group, overwhelmingly remain so, any one of them could be ready to snap.

What would such analysis cost for 80 million people? And are there enough providers to perform the task?

More than the country can afford, certainly more than people of limited means could come up with, so I guess the goal of disarming the poor would still be served, and no, the Department of Health and Human Services tells us there is already an overall shortage of mental health professionals without adding more to their plates. Besides, like other practitioners, they have specialities.

Just another excuse to extend the power of the state and make it incrementally harder to be a gun owner. The concept that psycologists can predict who will become irrationally violent is deeply flawed.

I assume the communist goals for Australia are the same as they are for the USA.

>>38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].

39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.<<

No, but voters should be tested about the issues before they are allowed to vote.

Probably someone should examine the heads of those who do psychological evaluations. Have you ever seen those folks? I mean the American Psychological Association is packed with anti-gun, anti-life, pro-gay, anti-American LIBs. Sure, they would unbiased evaluations. Yeah...I trust their “professionalism”.

Do NON-GUN Owners have a death wish.
The only one you can count on in an emergency is yourself. If you aren’t prepared to defend yourself (and family) then you will be just another crime statistic being collected by the police as they document what happened after the fact.

Hmm—80 MILLION gun owners, and what percentage of them have committed criminal acts with their guns? Of course we will never know how many lives have been saved because of gun owners.

The last I heard, Australia was NOT a killing field with blood flowing deep.

Once again—until one commits a criminal act, don’t treat him like a criminal!

I guess they would feel better if the guy jumped off a high building to kill himself....or decided to drive on the wrong side of the major highway to kill himself....

at least dirty, nasty, evil guns would not be to blame and even though only HE would be the victim with the gun, in the other scenarios other people would be at risk...

Here in Michigan about 8-10 years ago, when the Concealed Carry Permit first became widely available, our local sherriff added an additional requirement in our county.

We needed a “health care professional” to sign a “permission slip” stating that we were “safe” to carry a gun. Some went to their dentist, since that is a “healthcare professional”.

My hubby & I refused, so we had to go before the gun board for interviews to prove we weren’t nuts. It turns out a lot of people did the same thing.

I heard it was challenged in court, but don’t know how it turned out.

Besides, what “health care professional” would want to take on the liablity if it turns out they vouched for a nut?

Just more hoops to jump through.

I always seem to find that anyone opposed to firearms has some sort of mental issue or phobia. They need to start there.

The Word is 'Hoplophobia' ...and thank you Colonel Cooper for defining it

>>The concept that psychologists can predict who will become irrationally violent is deeply flawed.

This view, that sociologists and psychologists practice a “science” that can be used to reliably predict and alter behavior, is also at the root of most of our criminal justice failures of the last 50-60 years. “Rehabilitate the criminal” and give him an early release back into the community so he can offend again my a**. Incarcerate him.

If gun owners are subjected to a mental health exam so should politicians – they should have to be subjected to drug testing too. Politicians do a lot more damage than gun owners.

many, many years ago, before we in the peoples democratik republik of michiganstan, had shall issue, I went to try and get a permit (macomb county) the lady behind the counter told me that I could not get one, but was eligible for a limited permit, that allowed me to carry to and from hunting or to and from a range. She then winked at me and said, “ There are 18 ranges in macomb county, 4 of which are open 24 hours. You are always on your way to a range”......I liked her...

To paraphrase Freud...

A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity.

Wrong set of folks having their heads examined.

Excellent choice on the trap gun. Mayhap you should explain that you could’ve bought a Kreighoff or Perrizzi or another of those multi bazillion trap guns.
