Jerry Brown pulls ahead of Meg Whitman
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/20/10 | Carla Marinucci, Chronicle Political Writer

Democrat Jerry Brown has broken open the dead-heat contest for California governor, leading Republican Meg Whitman by 8 points going into the final two weeks of the campaign after massing robust backing from Latinos and eclipsing her support in the crucial Central Valley, a new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows.

In the first major nonpartisan survey since a series of statewide televised debates and revelations of Whitman's hiring and firing of an undocumented Mexican immigrant maid, Brown has 44 percent of likely voters to 36 percent for Whitman, with 16 percent undecided and other candidates drawing 4 percent, the poll showed.

That marks a significant shift in the race after months of being virtually tied. The last poll by the organization, in September, showed Whitman leading Brown 38-37 percent. The new poll of 2,002 adults, was taken Oct. 10-17, a period that included the candidates' third debate. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

Reflecting recent events

Mark Baldassare, president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, said the poll might reflect some recent controversies, public events and strategic changes in the gubernatorial campaign.

"Brown began campaigning in earnest," he said, "and there has certainly been a number of opportunities (in debates) for the voters to hear from the two candidates, to compare and contrast."

In California, where Democrats have a 2.3 million-voter advantage over Republicans, Baldassare said it appears that "the core voters that have supported Democratic candidates seem to have coalesced around Brown," including Latinos, liberals and women.

The people will get what they deserve.

Look what a transformation the DemonRAT-dominated CA assembly has fostered in that state.

Bankrupt.
Services on the brink of collapse.
Stink of pee everywhere.

Moonbeam will finish the job.

If that’s what CA wants, let them have it.

Brown can’t win with 44% and 16% undecided. Could it be that the 16% are conservatives who haven’t started holding their noses yet? When it comes down to it, they don’t want Jerry Brown and will bite the bullet and vote for Whitman.

Yes I was looking for the polling methodology and did not see it listed and the article seems to go in cricles focusing on certain constituents and certain areas of California but the at the bottom of the article it says

“But California’s likely voters believe Whitman would do a better job than Brown on the state budget and taxes by 48-40 percent, and that Whitman would do better on jobs and the economy by 47-39 percent, the poll showed.

I thought that the economy and jobs was the number one issue for voters

Not buying this poll...or any poll that finds the Dems suddenly surging!

Sorry, but my BS Meter is running hot tonight! Please, tell me, what have any Dems done to change some of these voters minds? NOTHING!

What the heck?

Every day there’s another poll showing that Brown has pulled ahead.

I have yet to see a poll showing that he fell behind.

How can he pull ahead everyday without ever falling behind?

Sounds like the annual wheat harvest in the Soviet Union. Every year was 10 times better than the last. And yet, the bakeries were always out of bread.

"Public Policy Institute of California" and "16 percent undecided"? This late in the game?

I doubt it.

If Brown wins, we might as well kiss California goodbye forever.

It will never recover. California is what the United States will become once Obama gets through with it.

I am a native Californian. The liberal transplants destroyed my beloved state and home town.

I would like to stay and fight, but the chances of me getting stabbed by a Mexican is greater than the possibility of making any meaningful political change.

It's already done -- doesn't much matter one way or the other.

It really doesn't. A Republican Governor will never get anything past the Democrat and liberal California State Legislature.

The Obama state media is out in non stop push poll attack mode.

The Gov can veto and stop the Dems too which is just fine.

If you read the comments section at the bottom of the article you can see what the poll is designed to achieve.

The little rats are going crazy over Jerry and smell victory. They’re probably getting drunk and stoned right now in their little gay rat bath houses...

It’s a PPIC poll.

Detail:
http://www.ppic.org/content/pubs/survey/S_1010MBS.pdf

Press release:
http://www.ppic.org/main/pressrelease.asp?p=1056

Some findings of the current survey:

* Jerry Brown leads Meg Whitman by 8 points in the governor’s race.
* Senator Barbara Boxer and challenger Carly Fiorina are locked in a close contest.
* Support for Proposition 19, marijuana legalization, has dropped below 50 percent.
* Six in 10 Californians are worried about being able to pay their rent or mortgage.

We are done either way. The California State Legislature is ALL Democrats. Everything Arnold tried to do was opposed by them.

Meg will have the same problem. I’m voting for her ... but it’s all up hill.

you are completely wrong.

the gov has power over redistricting and can veto all the left wing nutter bills from the SF leftist in the state House/senate.

It matter quite a bit.

Brown is at 44% and that's his high water mark.

Remember, he's already an elected official and has been for years and years ~ he necessarily plays the part of the incumbent.

The rule is that any incumbent who drops below 50% is gonna' lose! (usually).

I think the Hispanics and blacks are not going to turn out in the numbers sufficient to give the Governorship to the Democrats ~ with no Messiah running for the Presidency they'll figure it's not worth the hassle. After all, as Schwarzenegger has demonstrated, doesn't matter which party wins in California state government ~ the outcomes are all the same.
