Democrat Jerry Brown has broken open the dead-heat contest for California governor, leading Republican Meg Whitman by 8 points going into the final two weeks of the campaign after massing robust backing from Latinos and eclipsing her support in the crucial Central Valley, a new Public Policy Institute of California poll shows.
In the first major nonpartisan survey since a series of statewide televised debates and revelations of Whitman's hiring and firing of an undocumented Mexican immigrant maid, Brown has 44 percent of likely voters to 36 percent for Whitman, with 16 percent undecided and other candidates drawing 4 percent, the poll showed.
That marks a significant shift in the race after months of being virtually tied. The last poll by the organization, in September, showed Whitman leading Brown 38-37 percent. The new poll of 2,002 adults, was taken Oct. 10-17, a period that included the candidates' third debate. The overall margin of error is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.
Mark Baldassare, president and CEO of the Public Policy Institute of California, said the poll might reflect some recent controversies, public events and strategic changes in the gubernatorial campaign.
"Brown began campaigning in earnest," he said, "and there has certainly been a number of opportunities (in debates) for the voters to hear from the two candidates, to compare and contrast."
In California, where Democrats have a 2.3 million-voter advantage over Republicans, Baldassare said it appears that "the core voters that have supported Democratic candidates seem to have coalesced around Brown," including Latinos, liberals and women.

California, you are done if he wins.
Viva La Raza and California’s version of Obamacare, taxpayer funded abortions, and double property tax.
Sorry, but any poll that has sixteen percent undecided less than two weeks before an election where one of the candidates is as old as God I’m not buying.
Brown might win but it won’t be by eight.
why would anyone believe a PP poll from this SF Dem rag?
this poll looks over cooked.
No link to the poll at the Comical.. There’s a reason for that. It’s a PPP psuh poll designed to gin up the rat vote.

the dem party media is cooking up the push polls as fast as they can.
I’m glad that I’m not the only one seeing this narrative by the state run media play out.
Agreed, there seems to be a Nationwide (so Called) RAT Comeback, I’m so not buying it, I’ve talked to many regular Joe’s out there
Yeah, this is a silly poll... Really, if California, in dept, bankrupt, no jobs, etc,... elects Brown, they will get what they wish for (Bankruptcy). Strange state, and strange voting patterns... They will eventually reap what they sow.
It's already done -- doesn't much matter one way or the other.
agree, if this is true, California is already lost.
This makes me want to use foul language but i will controll myself. This bum if elected is going to raise our state and property taxes the Democratically controlled legislature is just chomping on the bit to ram crap through and good ole Jerry will sign anything the give him. People are so stupid it will be like the federal govermnment is now but in California instead of Washington
“We need fewer jobs and more welfare”
what an awesome platform
Yes, this whole comeback routine is a ploy.
Wow, just press ‘flush’ and watch Cali just go down the drain.
Jerry Brown will totally destroy the carcass that is California.
I dont believe the poll because I cant believe Americans are that stupid.
Her internal polling is showing, she is 5-6 points ahead.
