The United States has posted a second aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, in the Persian Gulf and northern Arabian Sea. The announcement came from the Pentagon Tuesday, Oct. 19, two days after the vessel put into port at Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain.
DEBKAfile's sources note that this is the first time in two years that Washington had deployed two aircraft carriers at same time - not just one - in waters opposite Iran and Afghanistan.

I thought the Nimitz’s carried 80-100 planes?
i think Debka runs this story every couple months as the Carriers switch out their on-station time...or whatever it’s called...but each and every time it’s “the first time in years!!!”
Perhaps they’re distinguishing warplanes from helos, awacs and cod sort of planes?

sorry for the 2
In Debka’s sidebar is this: “Third US Carrier, 4,000 Marines deployed opposite Iran.” Clicking the link goes to paid archive notice. Granted, this is a wonky site, but what’s with the 3rd carrier?
Yeah, maybe they’re referring to attack aircraft only.
It’s DEBKA...
Gunboat diplomacy is the best kind of diplomacy. Put 4 aircraft carriers parked right near Iran. Maybe have a sub surface every once in a while. Just to let Machmood know we’re thinking of him...
Three in the area is half of what would be needed to support an attack. So, it doesn’t matter much yet. Doesn’t hurt to keep track of the numbers though.

I have pictures ... I took ... of six carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin 1972 all together
As unreliable as DEBKA has shown itself to be over many years, I question whether it should be permitted as a credible news source on Freerepublic? It’s not dissimilar to posting articles from The Onion in breaking news.
The Lincoln always get stuck in the Persian Gulf. It’s been in home port being resupplied, after coming back from the Gulf.
If the SHTF in the Middle East, the LINCOLN will be there, and (if history is any measure) get stuck with doing the majority of the work.
Sweet. Was this during the Christmas day bombings in 1972? What was the reason for so many carriers off of Vietnam?
I have pictures I took of the battleships New Jersey and Missouri together. That was quite a site...
So did I.A Nimitz class carrier can carry a minimum of 80 Attack aircraft Not to mention it’s ASW and AWACS birds.
Seems like disinformation to me.
